Help for Anxiety/Confidence Issues in Adult Son

My son suffers with anxiety/lack of confidence, he has ASD. He has tried Matthews Hub for help but is trying to find a private female therapist that will be able to help him with his issues. One he tried just said straight no they cant help him and another he has messaged and they haven't gotten back to him, all the while this is making his anxieties worse, anyone know of any help out there he can goto. He has no friends and could do with something to help him socially as he tries to overcome these obstacles but gets very hot, sweaty and has to depart wherever he maybe at that time. He is the most loving, helpful, loyal to the core (especially to Tesco LOL), i just want him to blossom into the man he wants tp be and gain some confidence so he can see the beautiful soul I see every time I look at him.

  • Hello,

Depending on where you live you can self refer for support/therapy for anxiety. I know there's a waiting list but it will get the ball rolling. In the meantime, have you looked at Direct payments? He is entitled to a needs assessment and may be eligible for an allowance to employ a Personal Assistant that can support him to get out and about and build his confidence. You get all the support you need to find someone suitable.

My son is 20 and had a bad experience in college that really knocked his confidence. He got direct payments and employed someone to get him out and engaging in society again. He found places he likes to go and felt comfortable and within a few months didn't need support anymore.

The thing with anxiety is you have to push through it but it doesn't have to be done alone. Small steps, even a walk around the local park for an hour, are small wins we celebrated.

I hope you find what works for you. He is lucky to have a loving supportive Mama.

    Good luck
