Late diagnosis in early 20s

Hi all,

im new here, I was diagnosed with autism a few days ago and I don’t know how to feel. I feel very overwhelmed and alone. I feel like no one understands me yet im surrounded by love of family and my partner.
I’ve never been good at friendships. I’ve learned that I have been ‘masking’ for a lot of my life which has lead up to a big burnout where I’m not working, and worried for my future and judgement from society.
I feel very alone and scared, I don’t know what happens now, I will have a GP appointment soon on how to go from here but does anyone have any advice?
does the acceptance get easier? I was hoping for relief but I’ve gotten the opposite:(

please can I have some advice,

from a very lonely 20 something year old x

  • I'm so sorry to hear you are not feeling well.

Are you in touch with adult social care in your area? The reason I ask is they can support you if you have any goals such as travel training, employment support or even if you just want help joining a new activity club in your area. It is very holistic and with no pressure at all.

Please don't feel judged, easier said than done however, as the people who judge don't tend to be very nice people to start with. There are good people in this world who will always try to help and be kind.

You're not alone with being unemployed either, I am currently unemployed too for a mixture of reasons, so many young people are. In fact a neighbour of mine who was a social worker, university educated and has previous expierence in different sectors found getting a job impossible until she begged on her CV for a job in Morrisons.

Good luck with your GP appointment.

  • hi,

thank you for the reply! Yeah I’m looking into jointing a club or something at the gym that I can go to, so I can still be physically active and I find that helps me with my feelings.

i know there is kind people in the world I think I just need to stop trusting the people that arnt as bothered or understanding as I have been towards them so I’ve done a lot of protecting myself over the last few weeks and gone back to my roots at home, with my family and partner.

yeah it’s been very hard and I think that the best fit is part time until I’m ready to do something as a career. But for the next few months I’m resting and recovering slowlyHeart️‍adhesive bandage

    thank you very kindly
