Late diagnosis in early 20s

Hi all,

im new here, I was diagnosed with autism a few days ago and I don’t know how to feel. I feel very overwhelmed and alone. I feel like no one understands me yet im surrounded by love of family and my partner.
I’ve never been good at friendships. I’ve learned that I have been ‘masking’ for a lot of my life which has lead up to a big burnout where I’m not working, and worried for my future and judgement from society.
I feel very alone and scared, I don’t know what happens now, I will have a GP appointment soon on how to go from here but does anyone have any advice?
does the acceptance get easier? I was hoping for relief but I’ve gotten the opposite:(

please can I have some advice,

from a very lonely 20 something year old x

  • Hi and welcome to the community. You're no longer alone, you now belong to a group of people who are much like you and will understand.

There are people of all ages here, and we all have had problems with friendships, family relationships and many have been bullied and/or suffered peer or family pressure to "fit in", which often causes us to mask and can be quite debilitating and often lead to burnout.

I’m not working, and worried for my future and judgement from society.

Anyone can have health issues that prevent them working for a period of time, and burn out is just that. You will recover with time, support and self care. Remember that although people may judge you, it is not their right to do so and reflects badly on their character.

While you are not working, you have time to reflect on life and what you want from it, but also schedule time to fully relax and pursue what really interests you.

  • Hi,

thank you for taking time to message!
I feel very seen and heard on here so thank you for being apart of that too. I know I’m taking small baby steps and doing daily tasks like walking or joking out with a family member or even reading outside. I’m trying to rest while I’m off and reflect on what my future is going to be like now and have these talks with parents and my partner which is difficult to get into words but I’m trying.

that is very true, and only reflects of their bad intentions and choices. My partners parents don’t believe in mental heath and frown upon it it’s been a hard time dealing with leaving work on sick as his parents own it. And I’ve basically been cut out of their life. My partner has done so much for sticking up for me, fighting for me and looking after me. He’s learning to which helps a lot, we keep calling it ‘our bubble’ as it’s just us and we look after eachother and grow together. He’s the best thing that’s happened to me. so I’m learning to love my self, take time off, and breathe. It’s been helping so far.

  • My partners parents don’t believe in mental heath

that's a bit like saying "we don't believe in broken bones", isn't it? My ex-sister in law shied away from mental health, which was a little more difficult for her as she was a GP. So many people are so terrified of different brain wiring. I'm so pleased your partner is so supportive. Heart

  • Yeah I don’t know because they fear it or it’s the generation but it’s exactly that! I’ve accepted that I won’t have the love I wanted from them and de family things together but my partner is our protector while I’m not very well atm too, and the fact he is learning and reassuring me means more than anything.

it’s a tough pill to swallow but we will be okay and protect our peaceHeart️  me to I’m very grateful!
