New here. How do I avoid feeling cross with people who work for me?

Hello

I was recently diagnosed with mild ADHD, which I mask well, however it’s impacting my business. I am very thorough and a bit OCD, so when my staff take shortcuts, aren’t organised etc, I take it as a personal insult and feel offended that they would do things that could result in poor outcomes for my clients.

I definitely am too intense about this and need a strategy to learn not to react in the moment when I have heightened feelings on the situation.

Any input welcome

  • Perhaps research DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy), there are many useful techniques and tips which might help you, and importantly your staff.

I once worked for a manager similar to yourself who had standards I could not emulate. It wasn’t deliberate on my part nor intended personally against him, his emotional responses to my “failures” (in his opinion) contributed to in later years being diagnosed with PTSD. Do not underestimate the impact the anger a person in the power position can have on subordinates.

Btw I do not think one can be “a bit OCD”, one is either diagnosed with it or not, and for those who are it is a devastating illness.
