Diagnosed today

Hi,

I just received my diagnosis today. I am 53 years of age and this was not something I expected to happen to me.

I don't know how to process it to be frank. I've always been told I'm a bit odd, sensitive and antisocial.

I have to process this. Has anyone else here got any tips on how to process it?

Cheers,

Amanda

  • Hello and welcome to the 'Latelings' Club. I am coming up for 3 years post diagnosis (in my fifties) so can relate to your situation. I have found that I have been judged and labelled and the world has become a much more intolerant place for me to exist in.

I wish I could say things get better. Some things do and you will over time begin to understand yourself better.

Be kind to yourself it is not your fault, you are not broken just different.

  • welcome to the community, glad to hear of your diagnoses, as far as any support goes i reccomend trying CBT i can help a little but for me that unmasks ADHD so i need something for that too

  • Hi and welcome to your community, I don’t really have any tips apart from try to take it slowly. I was diagnosed last year at the age of 57. It takes a long time to process it all. ( if we ever do)

Remember you are still you and have always been autistic. I still mourn the person I might have been, the fact is that we can’t alter the past.  There has been situations in the past that I now see with more clarity. Every day you will notice a little bit more of what makes you autistic.

What you've described here will resonate with many people, it can be overwhelming to receive a diagnosis with a lot of conflicting feelings.

It may take a while to process but here are some resources that we hope will be helpful to you:
