Hello everyone

Hi everyone,

My name is Lauren I’m new to joining and I’m kind of nervous.

I’m 32 and I received an Autism diagnosis at the age of 30. I have never really been good at fitting in with people due to issues with understanding how Autism presents in friendships but I want to meet people who may understand that I am just myself. I have tried to fit into online communities in past but never found one where I was able to stay comfortable without judgement or bullying and I’m hoping by joining I will find a way to take off some of the loneliness.

I have interests in various things including digital art (my pfp is one I drew myself) learning languages (in particular German), video games, walking in forests and nature and watching documentaries on many different topics (animals and wildlife in particular).

I work a shop job which I really like because they have been very supportive with any difficulty I have. It’s not a lot but it’s something I enjoy to help people who come in to the store and get to talk to them. I’m hoping here I will find peace and people to connect with.

  • Hi thank you so much for the kind welcome! It is always nice to meet a fellow art lover and enjoyer of nature documentaries! I also find them very relaxing and I love to see the world through them. Do you have any favourite styles in art? I like digital art and painting with acrylics and drawing with ye olde pencil.

I know what you mean with the making friends, it’s so confusing sometimes that I feel like I’m missing out on some secret code that everyone seems to be using! Feel free to have a chat whenever with me as I’m always keen to try to connect with others!

  • Hi Lozza welcome

i read your post and thought for a moment I was reading my own. I hear you on never really fitting in, I’ve felt like that my whole life. I struggle to make friends, I think there is a secret telepathic dance that everyone else does but I don’t know how to when it comes to making friends. I think ASD has a massive impact on friendships I need to do more research instead of just thinking I’m not liked. I’m 36 was diagnosed 2 years ago, I work full time. I love art I used to do it a lot when I was younger less so now. I love the nature programmes especially David Attenborough they calm me. You learnt another language wow that’s impressive. I’ve always wanted to buy never found the time, life always gets in the way. I made this profile to hopefully make friends that understand me for me so I feel you there.

  • I love that you like such a wide variety of book genres and video games!

I have read and played a few of those myself! Alice through the looking glass was fantastic and I loved assassins creed origins!

  • I like reading lots of genres - including sci-fi, fantasy, time travel, thrillers, comedies, and occasionally romantic or historical novels. As a child I enjoyed reading Black Beauty which was from the perspective of a horse, but I can't think of any other stories from an animal perspective that I've read. I also particularly enjoyed Alice through the looking glass and the Chronicles of Narnia when I was young.

My favourite games include Fallout 4, Sims 4, Assassins Creed Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla & Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, and BioShock 1&2. I also have Chess and Cluedo on my XBox which I play occasionally.

  • Vielen Dank für das willkommen!

I am so excited to meet someone who has passed the B2 exam! And to have lived there for 6 years sounds absolutely amazing!

I have to say I’m so surprised that I can read so much and understand everything said without looking it up so that is such a happy note for me! I just need to get more confident putting my response in Deutsch I find the reading van be easier than forming a sentence if that makes sense?

I would love to travel to Deutschland one day soon to explore some of the culture and see some of the beautiful places I have  seen via photos!  And the reason I love the language is actually because I loved leading it at high school way back when and decided about 5 years back to try to keep my mind active by learning a second language. I tired multiple including Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Dutch, French, Spanish, Romanian, Hungarian, Italian and I finally decided that whil I was super interested in all of the languages I tried nothing quite felt as right as German did.

  • Thank you for being so kind in your welcome!

I think the loneliness can seem like a very crushing feeling sometimes for people I know it is for me so I’m glad to talk with so many nice people here already. I feel very much like I have found a place filled with people to who are wonderful to chat to.

I hope you too have found that here and I hope you’ll feel free to chat with me anytime! I am always happy to meet new people and learn about what others are interested in!

  • Thank you so much for the kind welcome!

What do you enjoy reading if I may ask? I was always a huge fan of books like watership down, traveller and the animals of farthing wood. Just some animal perspectives I absolutely loved in fiction but I do enjoy books about mythology and tales from around the world too!

I love video games too! My favourites ae so mixed but I love cozy games, and the odd pvp games. I really enjoy survival and simulation games too. Things like Minecraft, stardew valley, animal crossing, pokemon, overwatch 2, medieval dynasty, genshin impact I have lists and lists I love. What do you enjoy playing?

  • That is so cool! I love to learn about the lifestyle and habits of animals too and I love getting to follow along with a family of animals too and I see how it all works within their dynamics.
I love that you guy to learn such an amazing fact about the little hitchhiker! Sometimes it’s worth looking up even if it would be nice if the documentaries went into more depth.

  • Hi there! Thank you so much for the kind message I love tigers too! Ever since I was little I loved to draw animals and just loved the natural world.

Oh that one sounds really good! I love about the ocean because it’s so unlike the everyday we see. While all places in nature can be beautiful the ocean is just very magical. I do agree the trawling is absolutely horrendous to learn about and hopefully soon it will be stopped!

I recently watch wild Germany on a Disney plus I think it was and it was so relaxing and lovely!

  • Hi Lauren,
What a lovely introduction, thank you for sharing so openly. Like you, I’m also looking to connect with like-minded people to talk with and feel comfortable around. Loneliness is something I can relate to as well. I really hope you’ve found a place here where you can feel accepted and at ease.

  • Hi and welcome to the community. I'm a woman in my mid sixties and retired, and I enjoy reading and playing video games.

  • Herzlich willkommen! Deutsch ist nicht meine Muttersprache, aber ich wohne in Deutschland seit 6 Jahren und habe Deutsch B2 bestanden! Bist du schon mal nach Deutschland gefahren oder geflogen? Warum gefällt dir diese Sprache?

Welcome to the forum, i wish you best here!

  • I was catching up with Kingdoms, the one following 4 different predator families. I enjoyed the close look at their behaviour, but got a bit frustrated that it didn't mention the other species on screen as I like to know all of that too.

They did mention genets and I ended up researching them when I should have been going to bed. Like a large spotted genet was recorded on a camera trap in 2014 riding on the back of two different buffalo and a rhinoceros. The first recorded hitchhiking of the species.

  • Welcome, Lauren! Wow, your profile picture is really good art, I love the use of colours and the tiger is really good, I love tigers!

Animal and wildlife documentaries are great fun to watch, I love to watch those too, I watched a really good one recently about wolves on Disney Plus, and the recent one about oceans by David Attenborough (though it was a little sad to learn about bottom trawling in the ocean), I think that one was called Ocean by David Attenborough. Any good ones you've seen recently?

  • Thank you for the warm and enthusiastic welcome! I am excited to share art and get to talk more with everyone! I hope you’ll get a chance to do art soon! Which documentary did you see?

  • Thank you for the kind welcome! I am looking forward to did ding time here and your words have helped me feel a lot more comfortable and confident that this space will be lovely.

  • Hello, there's no need to be nervous, although I fully understand why people are.

It is always hard to choose to make your voice heard as you don't know what response you'll get. Even if you are anonymous, you still know who you are, so comments still have an effect.

But it's unlikely you have had a thought or struggle that someone else hasn't. Finding others is helpful to keep things in context or get comments, or to share advice. Obviously everyone still has their unique blend of traits, issues and life challenges, but there is often enough overlap.

German is a less popular language to want to learn, but if you like it or have a reason, why not.

  • Welcome  !

There is a creative space thread if you want to post anymore of your digital artwork, (I love doing art but don't have a lot of if time these days), lots of threads on video games, and feel free to start more nature ones, I'm a big nature documentary fan (was just watching one last night).

    Hope you can settle in!
