Newly diagnosed at 37 in Reading, UK

Hi there. I'm a 37 year old wife and mother, recently diagnosed as autistic.

I've always felt I didn't fit in, struggled to make friends and maintain relationships. I'm really hoping to meet some like minded people and form some meaningful connections.

Big fan of Lord of the Rings, baking, zombies, cats, crime/history documentaries, puzzles, colouring books, toadstools, the list goes on...

Would love to finally fit in and not feel so lonely.

Based in Twyford in Reading

  • Hi there. I’m 41, wife and mother diagnosed at the beginning of this year. I’m in Cheltenham so not too far from you. This is my first time on this forum and writing on someone’s post. How are you?

  • Hi Marie_1809

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your recent diagnosis.
I am sure you will find this is a great place to meet likeminded individuals and I hope you feel less lonely as you get to know others more.
I am a big fan of Zombies as well, don’t exactly know why but love anything zombie related.

  • New here too. In 30’s and newly diagnosed.

I always felt like I didnt fit in too. Hoping to learn to accept myself and start a whole new chapter from here.

  • Hi

“All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, deep roots are not reached by the frost.”

hehe was Tolkein talking about us?

    Pleased to virtually meet you.

  • Hi Marie and welcome to the community. I'm a woman in my mid sixties, retired and live in Dorset. I enjoy reading and playing video games.

I'm not a huge zombie fan, but I did enjoy reading the "Undead" series of books by RR Haywood.

  • Good morning from America, Marie!

Welcome to the forum! I hope you do find some connections here, but it can be a little difficult since we stay mostly anonymous on here. There is the possibility of friending someone and direct messaging, but it seems most communication takes place here in the forum proper.

I love history and documentaries as well. I used to teach music history when I was a professor a few years back, and that was a lot of fun to do.

  • Hello!

I received my diagnosis this week aged 51.

I've always felt the same, like a square peg in a round hole, and had difficulties maintaining friendships. I love history, crime fiction, and was mad about LOTR as a child.

I think this is a good place to be.

  • Hello, nothing wrong with liking cats.

They like and have their own routines, the need their own space and just walk away without a fuss when they need to. The give you space too.

They show their feelings clearly, fear, affection, annoyance, curiosity.

They communicate through body language and vocal cues that are quite consistent with little ambiguity. Few emotional shifts, no implied meaning, no social pressure.

Eye contact is not such a big thing. Plus they are tactile.

I always try to work out what they are thinking.

By puzzle, do you include jigsaws? Have you ever tried doing one upside down. I did a 500 piece one like that once when I was bored.

  • Welcome  , it sounds like you are in the right place! I do hope you join in discussions and start your own when you are ready! As another late diagnosed mum (41), it can be tricky at times, but it's been nice to have somewhere to share things at last. :)
