In general they are a place for autists or those living / working with autists can have a form of distanced social interaction that is tolerant of our needs, our poor social skills and special interests.

There are no real guidelines on what to post, just some on what not to do (see the Community Rules link on the top left of the screen) and if you spend some time looking at what people write about you soon get an idea of what a wide range of things we chat about.

Often people come here looking for help and there are plenty here with experience who will give suggestions on what you can consider. Other times people are looking for validation that what they experience or feel is "normal" and this can help them hear the experiences of others with similar issues.

We also have a few long running threads of general chit-chat where you can connect with others, practice some interactions or just watch others in their conversations - it is very relaxed on the whole and a place to feel welcome and which will value your input.

You may find your autistic trait of change resistance is connected with the repetetive behaviour as we often find that doing the same thing repeatedly can be soothing, but if it is unwanted behaviour and you feel compelled to do it (eg checking the door is locked 12 times before you can walk away from home) then it is more likely to be OCD.

I digress - are there any of your autistic traits that you think are causing you trouble that you want to learn ways to manage better?

Do you feel you understand your autism well now you have 8 years with the diagnosis?

In general you can choose what you want to respond to, or even if you want to respond to any of these posts. There is no obligation and no judgement whatever you choose to do.

Welcome to the community here - I hope you feel at home soon.
