What are you supposed to do with your life if you have autism?

I'm broke, unsupported, no job, disabled and reclusive. I can't find purpose in life. I don't want to give up because I end up having to pick myself up anyway. What do you do to find purpose?

  • Hi I’m really sorry to see you’re struggling with this rn. It’s something I struggle with as well as I am in a very similar situation to you and I know how daunting this can feel.

The thing that has helped me most is what my therapist told me. Set Small Goals. Instead of focusing on finding a grand purpose, try setting small, more achievable goals. It could be as simple as taking a short walk, organising a space in your home, or learning something new online. For instance last year I learned to paint! I’m not very good at it lol but it’s become a new hobby for me and I went from having nothing to do each day to now doing some painting each day.

Each accomplishment can build a sense of purpose. And it’s a victory for me, a small one, but every victory should be celebrated.

Each step forward, no matter how small, can contribute to a greater sense of purpose over time.

Remember, it’s ok to seek help, whether from friends, family, or even professionals. You don’t have to go through this journey alone. Your willingness to keep pushing forward is a testament to your strength, and I believe there’s a path to finding purpose that’s uniquely yours.

Take each day as it comes. You will get there x.

  • I remember these feelings, it’s sad. I can’t say, I know exactly how I actually left that state, but I remember telling myself that it’s at least worth to be here to experience the joy of reading Russian literature and studying the language and tasting it. It’s hard to advice anything, do you have a therapy or support looking for job?

  • Pray. The lord will help you. He has helped me when Noone has especially since I have autism. It's a cruel world out there for us and God has gotten me through it and still is.

  • I have a job which gives me purpose. Not because it's a job but because I care about what I do. But I do struggle at the weekends as I become very reclusive when not in work and then I get the what's the point kind of thoughts.

It's good that you don't want to give up.

I don't think anyone can tell you how to find purpose in your life. I think purpose is very personal. But I think you probably need to find a hobby or something that you care about. When you care about something, you will feel purpose. I know it's easier said than done. But having that feeling will then help you find motivation for other things. You don't have to make a massive decision all at once, baby steps.

You also mention being unsupported. Is this something you can also work on? Do you claim pip for example so you could pay for some help? You could also see if your GP has a social prescribing service. They may be able to help you find support in the community.
