Just an introduction

Hello! I was diagnosed in October after a long stint with CAHMS and several therapists. I have bad emotional dysregulation, and am terribly sensitive to noise and touch, as well as simply the presence of others in my vicinity. Since my diagnosis, I've had a bit of a journey internalising that I am in fact autistic, and it feels like a bad movie every time I have a flashback to my childhood and go 'huh, that was totally the autism!'. In some ways I feel like I have been failed by those around me - in part because of the long time it took for the suggestion of autism to even crop up, and because I can now recognise the autistic traits in my family members. But mostly, I'm excited to talk to people who I can finally relate to.  What are people's favourite songs? What movies do you like? Any interesting special interests? Any fun experiences related to autism?

  • Thank you for sharing! I will visit this site! I See aliens sometimes in my dreams

  • Mr spock invented gravy? I thought vulcans were vegetarians (ho ho)

  • Isn't he the guy who invented gravy? Grin

  • I'm happy you got back at it. I'll sure let you know when I rebuild anything. Hope you've had a great 2025 entrance!

  • That sounds awesome and I’m sure you shared some lovely memories building with your sister. I loved Lego as a kid and played it constantly, but when I became an adult I stopped as I thought I shouldn’t be playing with Lego any more. So I spent about 10 years away from Lego… but over the past 5/6 years it’s become my passion again and I’m so glad I got back into it. It’s very therapeutic, even though it’s so annoying when I put the wrong piece in and not realise until a lot later on and then I have to rebuild it lol.
Definitely keep hold of your old sets as some can grow massively in value over time! If you ever find yourself building a set again anytime soon, please share a picture with me Slight smile

  • Wow, great artists all. I thought Japan were great. I wanted to have hair like David sylvian. But my dad laughed , then said no (Haha)

I'll throw in 'airplane' and anything with chevy chase in rhe ring.

  • lol yes very expensive. I don’t want to even think how much I’ve spent on Lego over the years. But it’s cheaper than therapy lol.
The kingfisher is a lovely set, I love the colours. Those types of sets, and the botanicals, whilst not my first choice, I think they look incredible and such a great display piece.
Hopefully you can treat yourself to some more sets soon!

  • Mr spock I mean. I have no idea who Mr stock is. He he

  • Hi Andy, I used to love lego too! Since I was a kid me and my sister would always play and we've kept them since then. Even if I don't use them that much, I get why you like them! Building is somehow relaxing and there's a lot to create.

  • Hi again, and happy new year! I see we have a lot of common! I love everything about biology too, when I was little I would always say I wanted to be a biologist (even if right now I don't know what I'll end up studying!).

In my case, writing is like breathing, so definitely a forever phase!

And glad you liked The Cranberries! They have great songs

  • Hiya, I'm also new to all this. Like you, I think of odd things I did as a kid and now I understand. Like lots of others. If you met me and chatted to me, it would never cross your mind I was a bit different. I can't change what I am. I knew this to be true, even as a child. But sometimes I feel like I am in a straight jacket.

Music has been a big part of my life. I have my 100 ' tracks of my years', one song per artist only. Each song has to be one you love but also that has some kind of emotional significance. I put them all on a spreadsheet along with why I like them, so my family might one day get a beat on what I'm actually like.  Ruby tuesday by the stones reminds me of safe times with my nan, and unfinished sympathy by massive attack reminds me of my ex-flatmate.

As for movies, I am going to sound like  cliche, but star trek II. for someone who has muted emotions, Mr stocks death and funeral bring a tear to my eye every time.

  • Thanks! I’ll put it on my reading list!

  • I have a friend who is very into lego, and she convinced me to get my first set for my 18th bday. They ARE  expensive!! But it was so much fun!! I have lego kingfisher sat on my windowsill now.

  • The Clash is GREAT. I have one of their cds! London Calling.

  • Hi, odd.avocaddo!!

I think my special interests vary a lot as well. Maybe just the natural product of aging? I used to be obsessed with pokemon and How to train your dragon, and percy jackson as well. And I had a poetry and writing phase for a looong time. I quite like the cranberries! I confess to only having listened to Zombie before, but the lead singer's voice is just so great! Ridiculous Thoughts is great!!!

Biology is a massive current interest of mine - animals, humans, from big stuff like breathing in mammals to small stuff like protein structure is all so fascinating to me. My dream is to go to university for a biology related degree, although im not sure what yet.

  • Might I recommend a book? I loved The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells - it's scifi about a human/robot construct breaking free of its code and escaping the company that manufactured it. It reads a lot like the first percy jackson books, and similarly the main character (murderbot) is totally not neurotypical. They're decently short as well.

  • Space! I quite like the way stars/planets/moons etc are named. I've gone on a deep dive discovering all sorts of fun names for celestial objects on this program called Celestia, if you've heard of it? It's very cool - you can discover planets and moons and stars all in 3D. Aliens are also super cool - although I often only see them in horror movies, which I love! It's fun to imagine how they work!

  • Hi and welcome to the community! I feel I can relate a lot to your experience. My favourite music is progressive electronic, I usually dislike vocal, so I usually listen to instrumental music. I can listen to one track over and over and over for days and weeks until it tired off and I change it to come back to the previous one after some time. I hardly ever watch movies, there are a lot of movies I’ve never watched mainly due to sensory issues and lack of understanding of the plot and characters intentions. I simply ask “stupid questions” during the movie and others get annoyed. But I decided I have to watch the “rain man” in the future. I’m curious how much of that character I can actually relate if at all. It’s two years now that I’m obsessed about aliens, ancient aliens, space nasa etc, but also lack of time for myself and my toddler prevent me from diving there as deep as I would like to. Plus my therapist also created a sort of mess in my head recently but trying to get back on track.

  • Thank you for share this information........

  • Hi! Good to have you here!

I don’t have an all time favourite song, instead I’ll always listen to the most recent ones on repeat and those can be from any genre from classic over pop and rock to metal (I also play guitar and piano and sing in a choir, so those things also influence my taste in music).

I like many movies although I’m a big fan of shows. Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter adaptations and Matrix are great and back in the days I was really obsessed with Finding Nemo, The Beauty And The Beast and Sleeping Beauty. Encanto is my favourite of the very modern Disney films. There are too many good films to name though,

When it comes to special interests, I’ve got a pretty broad range of current and/or past special interests. Some of the most present ones include elephants, whales, many biology/chemistry-related topics in general. medicine and first aid, shows (constantly rewatching favourite shows and gathering useless trivia about them). Also fantasy books/reading (e.g. Harry Potter, Good Omens, Dune, Lord of the Rings, the Percy Jackson universe etc.).

Weird fun fact: I used to obsessively collect erasers (funny shaped ones like in the form of animals or objects).
