Just an introduction

Hello! I was diagnosed in October after a long stint with CAHMS and several therapists. I have bad emotional dysregulation, and am terribly sensitive to noise and touch, as well as simply the presence of others in my vicinity. Since my diagnosis, I've had a bit of a journey internalising that I am in fact autistic, and it feels like a bad movie every time I have a flashback to my childhood and go 'huh, that was totally the autism!'. In some ways I feel like I have been failed by those around me - in part because of the long time it took for the suggestion of autism to even crop up, and because I can now recognise the autistic traits in my family members. But mostly, I'm excited to talk to people who I can finally relate to.  What are people's favourite songs? What movies do you like? Any interesting special interests? Any fun experiences related to autism?

  • Hi and welcome to the community! I feel I can relate a lot to your experience. My favourite music is progressive electronic, I usually dislike vocal, so I usually listen to instrumental music. I can listen to one track over and over and over for days and weeks until it tired off and I change it to come back to the previous one after some time. I hardly ever watch movies, there are a lot of movies I’ve never watched mainly due to sensory issues and lack of understanding of the plot and characters intentions. I simply ask “stupid questions” during the movie and others get annoyed. But I decided I have to watch the “rain man” in the future. I’m curious how much of that character I can actually relate if at all. It’s two years now that I’m obsessed about aliens, ancient aliens, space nasa etc, but also lack of time for myself and my toddler prevent me from diving there as deep as I would like to. Plus my therapist also created a sort of mess in my head recently but trying to get back on track.

  • Space! I quite like the way stars/planets/moons etc are named. I've gone on a deep dive discovering all sorts of fun names for celestial objects on this program called Celestia, if you've heard of it? It's very cool - you can discover planets and moons and stars all in 3D. Aliens are also super cool - although I often only see them in horror movies, which I love! It's fun to imagine how they work!
