Exploring the fact I may be autistic.

Hello, I'm a 64 Yr old female and, after all the recent stories and information I have read recently on this website, I am convinced that I am autistic. I don't want to go down the referral line because of the time factor and the raking up of old memories. I also feel that any time allocated to me would be better spent on diagnosing a child who will then get the help needed to live a fulfilling life. I would like to look further into self-identifying and to get the courage to raise the subject with my friends and family. I don't know how to start with this. Thank you for reading. Take care all.

  • Hi and welcome. I had exactly the same thoughts as you when I realised I was on the spectrum, I'm the same age and gender as you, and I've been self diagnosed for about 8 years now.

Have you taken the AQ50 test? It was created by Professor Baron-Cohen, an autism expert, is widely used as a screening tool, and is easy to find online. It gives a fairly good indication. (My score was 42)

I also read a book called "Am I autistic?" By Lydia Andal, and did lots of online research into autism in adults - particularly women - including engaging with others on this site.

I hope the forum is of help to you.
