Support

Hi, my name is Lesley, and I have an adult son who was diagnosed border line autism in January this year. I would love to have some support for myself and my Son as we have struggled for 30 years, with no help or understanding from anyone.

  • I would go and see your GP and ask to have your son assessed, as I did with my son. He was assessed by a doctor who had been funded for a year by the governnent.

  • I would give her one more chance with a letter in the post and perhaps put on the bottom something like:

"We are concerned at the lack of contact and feedback, which as you understand is vital to our son's development.  Should we not receive, by [date you want], the full report as promised in your email of [date] regrettably we will need to take further action."

  • Thanks IntenseWorld. We do have the quotation from this SLT in writing in email; So far we haven't received any report except the short email with a few lines as descrpbed above. We only hope we can have a report and be able to talk to my GP and asking him to find the right professional to help my son at this stage.

  • If you have an address I would put in writing that you have not got the report you paid for.  Is it clear from your email messages that you have not received the report?  Could it have got lost in the post? Did you get your quote in writing detailing what you were paying for?

You can find out if she's a member of these: http://www.rcslt.org/

How can I make a complaint about an individual speech and language therapist?
If your complaint relates to an individual speech and language therapist, who works for an NHS body, another public sector or an independent healthcare provider, you can complain to that organisation in the same way as described above.

You can also complain to the Health Service Ombudsman if you are unhappy with the outcome of a local NHS complaints procedure or to the Care Quality Commission with respect to a complaint made to an independent healthcare provider.

    In addition:

    Independent therapists

    • An initial concern against an ASLTIP member can often be resolved by prompt, thorough, local and informal conciliation before it is logged as a formal complaint. Members of the ASLTIP Executive are willing to act as intermediaries (as would an NHS manager in the public sector) to help resolve concerns. As a first step, a complainant approaching ASLTIP with an initial concern will be offered this conciliation facility.
    • If conciliation fails, or if either party is unwilling to attempt conciliation, then the complainant will be advised to submit a formal complaint to the secretary of ASLTIP in writing. Complaints should normally be made within six months of the incident or the time it was discovered.

    or these: http://www.helpwithtalking.com/

"If you are dissatisfied with any element of the intervention or management of your ASLTIP member's speech and language therapy, then please contact the office in the first instance and we will contact you as soon as possible."

...and complain if she doesn't come through with the promised report.

It's a lot of money to pay with nothing to prove at the end of it.

  • Hello, we have a 6 years old son with ASD, we paid a female Speech and Language Therapist from STROUD, Gloucestershire to have a check and identify issues on my son, we paid her £780 for her up to 3 hours work to check and write report in October. After visited my son's school and took the money, she basically disappeared. We have been asked her for a report for over two months now by several emails and phoned her twice. She only replied us a very short email said that my son needed to have help twice a week without any explaination or support edvidents, we cannot use this piece short email to discuss with school, or to use it to discuss with our GP.

Please advise us for what to do?
