Grandmother

Hi

my grandson was diagnosed with autism today, although we knew my daughter was still upset. I would just like to gather lots of imformation as I want to help himmas much as possible. Thanks

  • Hi there everyone,

grandson is nearly three and is usually quite a good sleeper but for the last week he has been waking every two hours in the night and trying to pull his sheet off and crying out. He shares a room with his younger sister so my daughter has to keep rushing in all night. We have heard of weighted blankets, has anyone used these, if so, are they good....

    thankyou for reading

  • It is a big shock, especially when some people haven't across autism before.  Autism can be portrayed as the be all end all by people who don't really understand it, so with the right support and advice it will become easier.  I've met some fantastic people on the Austism Spectrum, and other people 'society' show as unsociable, such as people with Down's Syndrome, but they are some of the most caring, honest, and exceptional people I've met.  So, you never know what the future holds.

Feel free to ask any questions here.  Anything goes.

  • Many thanks for the reply. Look forward to enjoying this site, it's good to have support.thanks again

  • Hi - welcome to the site.  There's lots of info via the home pg + the posts so have a good look around + tell your daughter about it.  It can be a difficult time, even if you were as prepared as you could be for a diagnosis.  The diagnosis is important in so many ways.  It answers questions about why your grandson is as he is.  It helps you to understand him and how autism affects him as an individual.  It opens the door to support at school via a statement of educational needs.  Also, financially, if you want to, you can apply for DLA.  You sound like you'll be a great support to your daughter.  It's early days + you need time to adjust + get your heads around everything.  Take your time, you simply cannot learn everything at once.  Come on here whenever you want to, ask whatever you want, we'll try to help and, importantly, we'll understand.
