medical v psychological

Hi

I am a newbie.

My 7 year old is waiting for his nuerodevelopmental assessment. I am pretty certain he has ASD. He also has a gastric problem which is baffling the medical professionals. This is involves him having episodes of chronic spasms in his rectum. This started about the same he started school nursery. He has seen several specialist consultants who do not seem to be able to find anthing pysically wrong. Therefore they say it could be psychological. He has been prescribed several different meds over the year none of which have much impact. These episodes last for about 3 hours and only subside when my son is exhausted and falls asleep.

Its interesting that my son did not have any episodes over the school holidays but as soon as he has returned to school he had an episode.

I am desperate to understand what is going on for my son. Can anyone relate to this experience and if so can u suggest any strategies/therapies to help.

Thanks SB

However at 7, I would not be filling his head with Autism information, I would be just giving him information on this surroundings as a reassuring voice(you help his mind), an open friendly monologue like a car directional GPSLaughing, because what you take for granted as a Neurotypical person in the world is not the mind filter/lens that an autistic person will see through, for me personally everything is very complex, I miss the simple Undecided angle. This is because my cognitive side is trying to make up for the emotional centre malfunction which is set to a childs fear. Tongue Out because I don't have the emotional coping abilities,, so I have to try and understand things by the cognitive mind understanding, so the more verbal explanation I get the better it is for me.  This search for coping understanding increases your IQ it grows and grows, I was social dumb as a child, but an adult my IQ is gifted. So there is a emotional pain to intelligence increase correlation for me by a history of hyperstimulas(the world) and thus hyperawareness(sensory increase).

An example of this, is my support worker will tell me what she is doing and why all the time, so that she is not just moving about in my world coming in and out my personal space without me knowing why, who, where. This allows me a cognitive bearing rather than an emotional bearing. Imagine some stranger in the street suddenly just stepping up to your face, suddenly overwhelmed..,  this is how it is for me "even with people I know". I think there is a part of my brain which does not recognise them at first, like a blind spot in emotional recognition. This is one of my examples, but lets you understand the difficults an autistic person may have.

Obviously an autistic parent group for yourself would be good starting point lots of hot cups of tea, biscuits and shared information. Smile

I think it is good that you seek early information on the forum, it is good hear from you and there is lots of parents who can guide you.

    You are not alone. Smile

  • Hi openheart

    Your insight is so helpful.

I am determined now to get the help and support he needs. He loves school but it has been a battle for him from the off. Your so right about environmental factors bring out the symtoms. Ineed to find a way of helping my son understand autism. Any suggestions age appropriate books?

Thanks, i don't feel so alone Smile

  • medical v psychological,, no both, got to work on both they are cross-related.

for me with aspergers, it is comfort, support and explanation I need from others.

I just list the problems, one at a time,, and get assistance to overcome,, but mostly manage. Some of the issues do not go away, but it shows a pattern and gives more information to the doctor., so record.

Example: gastric problem which is baffling the medical professionals, chronic spasms in his rectum. I have the same problem, the doc gives me beta-blockers (to slow down the intestine system) and a pile cream (to relax the rectum), this may not be the solution for your son,, but the principle is .. try it and see it works for a couple of weeks and,, cross it off the list and try something else.

quote "He has been prescribed several different meds over the year none of which have much impact"... this was the same for me and many other people with autism, the neurological drugs do not work and health wise, blood tests etc are clear. So it is environment that I believe is the key problem,,,  this may sound terrible,, but being part of the humanoid race gives me autistic behaviours. Going to nursery, school just brought out hell for me. Comfort environment*(what/who they know) and explanation*(so they know) of what you are doing next is very important. That is why when I am stressed I always run back to my safe zone, so I know were I am in the world and not overwhelmed.

    Hope this info helps.Smile
