Yellow teeth natural or result of poor care of self due to ASD?

Since fourteen years old I have had remarks on the yellowness of my teeth.  I presume it is because I’m autistic and my sugary diet and inability to brush properly or care for my teeth properly.
Dentists say that some people have yellow teeth naturally.

Really?
REALLY?
Come off it.
I think it’s nonsense that natural yellow colouring could ever get commented upon. I wonder if this is an issue for anyone else?

I'm now 57 and I still hate brushing my teeth.

I guess I’m not alone in that either.

  • Thank you for this information.

  • You can really have yellow teeth, whether you brush or not. It is a fact, and the dentist was correct.

I myself have been a dental nurse, and I know this is true from learning my job, and especially having seen and worked in so many mouths.

Sometimes it just happens. Sometimes it’s down to medication, sometimes food (or coffee), but it’s not often associated with not brushing teeth., as this would lead to build up of plaque which tends to be around the gaps, and base of the teeth where food collects.

The surface of the teeth is covered with enamel, and when this disappears gradually with regular brushing, over the years it can lead to slight discolouration.

You can easily whiten teeth using safe products from the dentist, but you won’t get this as an NHS treatment, as it’s cosmetic. The teeth will lighten gradually, but will never be that ridiculous bright white that some celebs pay for.

  • I bought packets of biscuits with my pocket money from the earliest age.

When was a fourteen I remember a six year old child remarking on my yellow teeth. My mother couldn’t afford my dental treatment when I was a teenager and always draws attention to the multicoloured transformations they exhibit.

  • Yellowing of teeth with age is a real and natural process. My father was a maniac brusher of his teeth, he had one filling at 19, then didn't need any further dentistry until in his 50s, and his teeth definitely yellowed to some extent. The yellowing is actually of the dentine inside the teeth, and not the enamel on the outside. Poor dental hygiene can make yellowing worse than it would be otherwise.

  • I dont like brushing my teeth, it sounds awful but I sometimes go a few days without doing so but.....when i do, i go nuts.  I de-scale them myself and remove all plaque and have a tool to do this (similar to what dentists use). Then give them a thorough brushing.

I think i didnt go the dentist for about 15yrs and bit the bullet one time.....it was hell but.....luckily, everything was fine.

Maybe look into teeth whitening toothpaste (unsure if this works) or bi-carb type toothpaste.

Oil pulling is meant to be good for all round mouth health (worth googling).

    • Hi, you are not alone. I’m 55 and haven’t been to the dentist for years. I had a lot of trauma as a child with dentists. Having someone that close to my head and putting things into my mouth causes massive meltdowns and I mean massive. My teeth are terrible, I can’t brush them as putting a toothbrush in my mouth just causes anxiety and gagging.  It is an autistic trait, it is a sensory overload. I believe there are dentists who specialise in working with autistic people.
  • I was bullied by a teacher saying I'd had yellow teeth. Kept on asking me have I cleaned my teeth. Did a self care day.

    Mouthwash is good.
