Hi

My 10 year old son has recently been diagnosed with autism so will be grateful for any advice offered

  • Just had our youngest daughter diagnosed, ive alot to learn too.Feeling really sad but glad we know now.

  • Thanks for the replies. My son has a learning disability and also a speech and language disorder. He has plenty to say but is very difficult to understand. He has been attending a main stream school for two days a week (where he doesnt cope well) and a specialist speech and language unit for three days where he does better. He has a statement for 25 hours. Since his autism diagnosis ive been told he is no longer eligable to attend the specialist unit as autism has become his primary need ( cant get my head round that ). At the moment im trying to get him into special school but it seems like im constantly fighting against the education authority to get whats best for my son. Has anyone else  had this problem.

  • Hello I have 3 sons, 8year old with Aspergers with additional difficulties, the other 2 sons show charactoristics of being on the autistic spectrum.  Plus my husband recongnises charactoristics with himself.

I believe a good starting point is supportive parents, support groups for parents, plus playlink to provide a befriending service to children to access clubs/ groups.

I hope that is of some help?

  • Hi - welcome.  Please tell us a bit about your son so we can offer better adviceSmile.   How's he doing at school?  Also, lots of info via the home page.

  • Thanks for the advice. I've such a lot to learn .

  • 1.) let him know what is going to happen prior to every engagement with people, so that he knows what is going to happen and there is no surprises or social shock for him, the things you tell him are going to happen,, MUST HAPPEN, so that trust and relaxation occurs builds up long-term.

2.) Cue him gently to do things

3.) Just listen do not talk or do not talk much, this takes you into his background and then you can engage back in at his pace.

My brother calls me the Deer, sensitive, highly aware and must not be spooked !
