This is all new

I would like to introduce myself. I am mother to an 8 year old boy whom we have just been told by the clinical psychologist has aspergers. It has taken 18 months to get this diagnosis as they first just said he was an anxious child, it's only that they were going to do some work with him that they have changed their minds. We asked for him to be refered as we have suspected he was autistic for a long time. He has lots of sensory issues. He won't eat most thing, doesn't like smells, won't wear certain clothes and needs cuddling all the time. he is very dependent on me and worries when he doesn't know what I'm doing or where I am.

I wonder if anyone could point me in the direction of some information to give to school about his eating issues as they keep making him eat things which causes great distress at the time and when he gets home full meltdown and a very bad nights sleep. I have been in to talk to them but would like to give them some leaflets.

Any advise please.

  • Hello.

Your son sounds just like my son.! My son turns 8 next month and we have been fighting for someone to listen to us since his nursery had concerns at age 2. It wasn't until we moved house and he started at a new school in year 1 that our world's changed. Firstly they thought he was "gifted & talented" as he was way above his age group for reading and writing but that was his "thing" and something he still loves but everything else is a struggle.

When he entered year 2 we raised our concerns and the school also approached us due to his anxiety and sensory issues. we pushed for a camhs and OT referral and after just 12 months he has been diagnosed with Autism spectrum, Dyspraxia and elements of adhd.! He has also recently started to have blackout episodes so we are waiting for an eeg to determine petit mal epilepsy.

Where as your son loves cuddles mine is the opposite, he hates to be cuddled and didn't cuddle us until he was 5 and his sister was born. He is very fussy with foods and what he will eat must not touch on the plate or it goes in the bin. My son will not eat school meals so we provide him with a lunch box that he helps to prepare in a morning so that he knows what he has and that works for him. My son will not wear clothes, at home he wears his underwear only and its a struggle to get him in his school uniform.!!
