Parent of Adult Aspie

Hello,I am the parent of and adult child with high functioning autism. I'm married and our son has an older brother.. He is a graduate with a good degree and currently working very part time in an area related to his degree.  He is living with us and showing little sign of wanting to be independent which us fine as we are happy for him to find his own way. It can be a challenge as he doesn't want to talk much, tends to want to do his own thing and unfortunately suffers from anxiety. I've joined this group so I can share experiences and hopefully find a way to support my son in a positive way.

  • Welcome to the forum.  I hope you find it beneficial..  Your description seems to match my situation until I was 30.   I left home to do phd and stayed living away from home with my ex for 19 years.  We split up in 2017 and since then I have appreciated the freedom of being on my own.
    I’m now 55.
I now have a full time time permanent job and am paying off the mortgage on my flat.   Life is challenging for me as it is for everybody.  I’m availing of specialised counselling and open to all outside help.
Gratitude for at least three things every day is my goal.

  • Hello. I'm a 39 year old still living at home. I don't how similar i am to your son.  Welcome to the forum.

  • Hi, I'm a young man who has aspergers. I had psychosis and that made me really isolated for a while but I've improved my life in several areas including anxiety (and setbacks). I'm not independent yet and won't be for a while because I'll be doing an access course soon but if you have questions I could try and answer?

  • Hi Chris,

    Welcome to the online community.

Our information page on anxiety may be useful for looking at ways that you can support your son in dealing with this - https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/mental-health/anxiety
