Hi i'm new is anyone else struggling?

Frown My daughter was diagnosed a few months ago and i'm REALLY struggling to talk to family members/friends about it. My mum and mummy buddy know but that's it

It feels like im labeling her or telling people to lower their expectations of her (negatively) please help.

  • hi CuppaT - There are lots of posts on this site about parents + their feelings about diagnosis which could be helpful to you, so have a look if you haven't already.  Could you give us a bit more info about your daughter's diagnosis/age?  That wd help posters with with replies.  Also will she be getting a statement of educational needs to help her with support at school?   ASD can be difficult to explain + for others to grasp so family/friends will have to know at some point - take your time till you feel ready.  Getting a diagnosis (label) is important.  Your child is the same child she was before the diagnosis, only now you + others close to her will be able to develop thru learning a better understanding of how autism affects her as an individual.  Without the "label" my son wdn't have been given the support he needed.  His life + mine wd have been much more difficult.  Because of the diagnosis I started to understand his better, why he did certain things + not other things.  Over the yrs I think my understanding's improved as he's developed + become the individual he is today.  bw
