Husband diagnosed

Hey, my name is Cara. I am looking for help, support and encouragement. My husband was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with Autism. I always knew he had something, but did not realize it was this. We have been married 7 years now and have had our share of ups and downs. He has gotten violent at times, but knowing this, I understand better. I don't excuse the behavior, but I better understand it. I, myself have a learning disability. I graduated from college with a teaching degree and a special education endorsement. I was trained to spot the signs, but when it was right under my nose at home I missed it for years. My goal, is to get him all the help and support I can and to be a better wife to him. I signed up for this, not knowing exactly how intense his problems were, but I plan to stand and support my husband. I just need help too.

  • Thank you so much! You have no idea how much it means to me. I know I am fighting an up hill battle, but now I know where and what I am fighting.  Being told by several professionals, that he was "normal" made me feel like a crazy person. I have learned to cope and adapt for my disability and I hope to teach him to do the same. He does not know what it is yet. But I told him that he has lived with this all his life, and now that we officially have a name, we can work on it together. It's not a death sentence, the label will help him know that there is a reason for his struggles.

  • Wow. Sounds like your husband is very lucky to have you fighting his corner.

  • Hi cara, welcome aboard, I really just wanted to tell you how amazing you are. Thank you.

You really are a special kind of person.
