Hey all, I'm the mother to an 8 year old boy diagnosed just last week with autism..... This has come as quite a shock, and I'm finding it hard to come to terms with or believe...
Even though he has been diagnosed I still can't see why, at the same time I'm happy that at last we can start to get some help with his education (he still can't read or write) but after spending the last two days in a course for parents of children with ASD the realisation is sinking in and I feel completely devestated! I don't think I've ever been so upset and unable to stop crying. I know my child is exactly the same wonderful little thing but I feel like he had been snatched away by the diagnosis??
Any thoughts on how to get over this feeling of loss?
Yes, I can totally understand to the "grieving" bit , it was your commet of "the son you thought you had but never really did" bit that I disagreed with. The "label" doesnt change anything. They still have exactly the same son that they will know better than anybody.

I was simply stating why the grieving happens, not saying that one should for that reason.
But I do also think one shouldn't imply it's wrong to grieve.
