Hello

Hello, I am mum to two fabulous children, my eldest is nearly 3 and has (2wks ago) got a diagnosis of ASD, and my daughter just turned one. We are in the early days of the ASD world. There is so much to take in its been a little over whelming to be honest. And although it was something that we had expected/anticipated (although not formerly mentioned by any professional that we were dealing with, annoying!!!) when we got the diagnosis confirmed it was still a shock.

We are on the waiting list for a couple of groups and informative sessions and are hoping that after attending these we will feel  better equipped to learning to deal with our sons needs.

This is the very first forum I have joined, hello to you all and goodbye for now.

  • Hi there, Its still early days post diagnosis but I would have thought that I would have been contacted by now. The letters confirming diagnosis have not been received by those who should be getting them. I am sure I am being impatient but after the initial shock I am now very much in the pro active mode on the NAS website daily and wondering where to go next. I think there will be help and input but it all takes time, so I am told!!!

  • Hello and welcome

It is a little overwhelming when you receive a diagnosis even if you are expecting something. Up till then you convince yourself that only you can spot that certain something, but to know that others agree is something else.

Will you still have input from the 'professionals' or are you now having to find your own way through the world of ASD?

  • Yeah, I think so. To be honest I don't know much about that side of things - I was only diagnosed with Asperger's just over two years ago myself - and I'm approaching 40!

  • Hi there,

At the moment they have said that he is showing characteristics to put him on the spectrum but have not said where. They have not given us any indication that this is something that they are likely to do any time soon either. The way we understand is that he has an ASD and its only through time and development that they can determine where abouts on the spectrum he will fall??? Is that right????

  • Hello Nina, and welcome to the forums! :-)

Hope you find them, and the wider NAS site, helpful.

May I ask what specific diagnosis your son has?

Or is still a case of "He's somewhere on the Autistic Spectrum but we don't know exactly where"?
