CAMHS refuse to take developmental history into account!

Hi there,

Can anyone offer any advice on the following;

Our daughter is now 12yrs old and almost finished the diagnosis/assessment stage at CAMHS, but right from the start we have had issues with the psychologist not wanting to listen to her behavioural history. I had thought I was imagining it until last week when I asked (for a third time) if we could make a separate appontment without our daughter being present for a session to complete her history. I was told that she had all the information she needed and that no more was required as she was very confidant she knew what the problem was. I reminded her that to date she only had details of my daughter up to age 2yrs and nothing since, but she was adamant that she had everything she needed!!!

I wouldn't mind, but she had already told us that although some people will diagnose Aspergers if it it mild, she said she wont. I am very concerned as we have already been told by the paediatrician (informally) that she has mild Aspergers with Anger Management issues, but if the psychologist wont hear us, she wont be able to make a diagnosis of Aspergers, and without it we are just left with a very angry child and the assumption that we are bad parents!

We have gone to our Gp now, but they wont refer us to anyone else until we have completed the process and then we will have to complain if we disagree with the result. Surely this is just wasting everyones time.

Both my husband and myself are worn out, dealing with unprofessionals, and the constant stress that our daughter causes. The only help offerred so far is anti-depressants for us parents, not quite what we had in mind.

Is this normal, I thought you could be re-referred if you didn't get along with your childs psychologist!

I have absolutely no faith now. She even told us that the ADOS test she did was difinitive and would prove absolutely if our daughter had an ASD or not.

Any advice from other subscribers would be helpful,

  • My GF has BiPolar and while trying to get her diagnosed he Pyschiatrist (spelling, sorry), he would not listen. What I found helpful was telephoning the then PCT, demanding to speak to a director and not leaving the telephone until one spoke to me.

    I then reminded him of his duty of care and the pyskes duty of care. Mentioned I would be informing the general medical council if that I didnt believed they were carrying out his duty of care and that I would like registration numbers to accurately complain. Mentioned second opinions too.

    Well what was amazing is................an a appointment with a proffessor was made within 2 months, CPN appointment every week etc.

    I hate confrontation, I truly believe this is why Charver get lots of help (because they kick off). So I took a leaf out of the book of charverdom, worked a treat.
