denied pip for 26 year old man who is autistic and cannot mix

I'm writing to seek advice on disagreeing with the decision of the pip assessment.  Letter is dated 15th Nov.  I received it 19th. So need advice now. Assessor described my son as interacting well with good eye contact.  His eyes faced the floor as normal for him. No signs of stress. Visibly shaking from my view. Totally red neck reaching his cheeks, from my view. Didn't need prompting. Every question had to be repeated and re-phrased.  I had to help and answer 8 out of 10 questions. Can plan and follow journeys unaided, even though I told her he's never been on a bus or taxi or train alone. He can make complex budgeting decisions even though he has none, as he lives at home. How can this be allowed? I told the assessor he'd been on the loo all morning and had to find a cafe for loo as we walked to the assessment.  No mention. They said everything about him was normal. This is a total untruth. Why would I be trying to find him some small help if he were normal? If he was, he'd be full time employed with good salary, friends, social life, girlfriends, that's normal. My son has worked at homebase filling shelves for 8 years. 2 shifts a week late at night. Every shift he is filled with dread and feels sick. This will never change. I'm proud he hasn't said I'm not going. But if money were no object, I'd say stay home. The consultant that diagnosed my son asked why I was there?  Said, my son was diagnosed with learning difficulties since couldn't talk properly at 5. And we, his parents won't always be around, need to know if he is autistic as I've read similarities. We worry about how he'll look after himself after were gone. My son is a prisoner in his own home due to his autism and it's deplorable that bureaucracy and cuts in benefit leave my son totally ignored. I need advice please.

  • Thank you for your reply. I found it interesting. My son has been diagnosed with autism. I was in the assessment with him. Their account of what was said by him is a total lie. Their account of what he said about what he is able to do is a total lie. They awarded him o points. Luckily I was a major participant in his assessment as he was unable to understand the questions. They had to be repeated and constantly rephrased. I am a witness to the untruths. I'm a witness to the answers my son gave on the activities he cannot carry out without help. Had I not been present at the assessment,  I would have strongly doubted their report. But I was there.

  • From your message it appears your son hasn't had a diagnosis of autism. The bad news is that even with a diagnosis of autism in adulthood, that's unlikely to get him PIP. PIP is awarded based on severe medical conditions, but more importantly how they disable the person. I had an adult diagnosis of Asperger's & it's changed very little. As some people with it can hold down normal high paid jobs. They extrapolate that so called best case scenario for them. The conditions that co-exist with it are the main factor that scores points. My depression & agoraphobia in connection helped me get ESA support group. But it's hard to get recent proof for these, so I was also recently denied PIP. Due to my problems it's then hard to appeal. My appeal is currently very late & not even in yet, as my advocate was apparently not even allowed to help me.

The PIP assessor would be doing the opposite of looking to diagnose disability, they're only there to declare ability. And most are sneaky. If you have no written professionally confirmed proof the person can't do the task, many will just push their luck by claiming the claimant did it or can. As they know later you'll be unable to prove they lied & didn't act in good faith.

If he can hold down a job, the sad fact is that he's at present considered able bodied. DWP only seem interested in breaking the person. And then a GP may show mercy & write mild depression. But their motive isn't altruistic either, they're hoping a few months off & then you'll gladly volunteer back to being chained to the workplace. I've personally found that most people have no concept of true mercy, most will use you for self gain or bin you.

  • I'm unable to see any reply to my post. I've been told to read the email twice before I'm able to read any more reply.  I don't understand. I've asked for help by email but no reply yet. Frustrated.
