Wait times for Adult diagnosis.

Hello, My whole life I have felt different. I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 15/16. I turn 22 on June 27th. ADHD never seemed like the right thing for me. Today I went to my GP and explained stuff in detail, I went in with a hand written letter explaining what I feel like and how life is for me and she took that letter and said she would and she is sending off for a referral for Aspergers. I am quite an anxious person and I would appreiate it if someone else who has tried/ succesfully had an adult diagnosis would reply to this.

I was wondering how long or what happens how. She said I would recieve a letter in the post but as i said I am quite anxious to know the time scales as it would maybe help my mind settle slightly. As I said my whole life I have felt different and I am eager to try and get to the bottom of it.

I live in the North West of England, in Warrington.

What time scales did you face from the moment you left the GP? and what happened after you got the letter?

thank you

Morgan.

  • I was 6 months from GP referral to assessment. I was told by the assessor I'm quite typical Aspie. That was a couple of weeks ago and it will take a couple of months to get the written diagnosis.

While the diagnosis does not change anything it helps me understand who I am.

  • Dear Morgan,

I can only hope luck can be on your side.

Here is my story. Myself had a very hard time at university (although not as bad as uni at secondary school, however after left school is even worst) too because of absolute social isolation > sensory(noise) > anxity issues. Even they(some university staff/tutor etc) have move me multiple times (6 times in 3 years) and went to GP for a dozen of times addition to a psychiatric assessment (for dyslexic) yet no one ever suspect me having Autism Spectrum Disorder (maybe I really don't).

I embrace a master degree (and live at home - Manchester, so things are more structured) after 3 years of recovery of the terrible university experience. However, I had meltdown once again and went to the university counselling. My counsellor believe I might have ASD (I know almost nothing about ASD prior to that) so I got a refer from them and have assement within a month however I just want you to bare in mind getting a digonesis is not a magic wand, it doesn't solve any of the problem and support maybe still limited. Myself still getting no support after the digonsis (so still socially isolated and jobless (for 6 years) and living with family). Knowing you have it maybe a relieve and explain some issue but you should never think just beacuse you have ASD and use it as excuse.

One more thing as I went to GP about ASD and try to get a re-evulation in October(2015) they did refer me but I just get a letter at this Jan said there is a long waiting list and I still have not heard from them since (I live in south east now). So what area you in (it is matter of simply supply and demand issue) does play a large part of the waiting time.

I have a suggestion, try counselling service they might be better idea or able to help identify your issues (well it did help me identify some issues, but just no support it is.....) or even have a better chance of referring you (might put you higher priority).

Btw there is no more dignosis of Asperger (please refer to DSM-5). It fall in the catorgory of ASD now.

  • Wow! 2 years is a long time :( I'm currently at university and the university don't really see ADHD as a thing that needs extra help in lessons which is really quite annoying. I have 1 hour of help a week in the library with someone who knows next to nothing about my course. I probably should've gone for help sooner.

I am sick of feeling this this extra terrestial 22 year old who feels like they are in this loop of their 11th year in life. I try so hard to try and overcome it but I cannot.

I hope to get this sorted.

    Thank you :)
