Community care assessment HELP

hello, my brother had an assessment and was diagnosed with Aspergers on his 29th birthday!!! this has been a big relief for the family as we now understand why!!!! We are so keen to help Elihu so had a community care assessment arranged.  Mum, dad, Elihu and his 2 sisters were present to support.  Bottom line, he will receive no support, despite the fact that during the assessment his diagnosis was evident.  In fact the report did mention that he was rude a few times.  The assessor had access to his comprehensive diagnosis prior to the assessment.  My parents are not coping with living with Elihu, but the report states that Elihu is well supported .  It appears that caring for him is just not on their agenda as my elderly parents are doing it anyway.  It does state that he is unsafe as he easily entertains strangers, leaves doors unlocked so that he can just go out without a key And is prone to financial abuse.  The assessment was not carried by a qualified social worker. We have decided to appeal.  Please any tips or advice will be welcome.  Thank you very much

  • Hi Elihus sister,

It sounds like you are experiencing a difficult time.

I would suggest removing actual names from your post/s as this is a public forum,

I hope you find the support you require, have you considered calling the NAS helpline?

  • Usual response from Social services, it seems that assessments are frequently carried out by unqualified personnel as my son had one too [no help].  He was assessed by a trainee Social Worker.  You are up against the system I'm afraid having a diagnosis means nothing unfortunately unless you have evidence that your elderly parents are not able to cope alone, are they sole Carers?  Have they had a Carers assessment by Social Services? Again it depends on the quality of the evidence that you are able to give, and the criteria for support is set at an almost unobtainable level.  I am too tired to appeal myself, burnt out and worn out bu I wish you Good Luck.
