Another surgical scandal

Yet another health trust is having to conduct enquiries after it was found that a surgeon who is still employed by them but no longer opperating carried out unnessercary mastectomies. In this case it was complicated by the trust sending women to a private clinic which this surgeon owned and ran, not only was there a clear conflict of interest, but how can this sort of things be undetected for so long? I know the only difference between god and a consultant is that god dosen't think he can practice medicine, but the arrogance and lack of care towards women is shocking. 

Another thing, whilst you do hear of people being opperated on wrongly, does it seems to be overwhelmingly women who are mutilated by the medical profession?

    Lol I’ve got a differing, less flattering opinion about god, but I’ll save that comment for another day.

    This is weird though. Like, why mastectomies in particular? Did he not specialize in any other type of surgery? ‘Cause yeah, if he was only specialized in mastectomies, that may partially answer your question as to why women in particular were targeted. Otherwise, I don’t know? I mean, I’d think this kind of scandal would be caused due to greedy intentions rather than a sick, sadistic desire to mutilate women, but because of the nature of the procedure it really makes you wonder…

    It dosen't just happen in the private sector, theres been plenty in the NHS too, not just mastectomies, but hystorectomies and botched ones too that have left women incontinent, sometimes doubly so.

    We keep having these scandals and I really don't think its all about money, we're told lessons will be learned and we've been hearing this for years. I think theres still quite a lot of sexism in medicine, a lot of men choose to be gynaecologists and specialise in women's cancers and I wonder why? Obviously some will go into those fields with the best intentions, having family members who have suffered and wanting to be part of the solution instead of the problem. But, it also gives a lot of control over womens bodies and I don't think we should seperate doctors from any other section of society that want to control women and their bodies, its the ultimate cohersive control, tell a woman she has cancer and needs life saving surgery, who's not going to agree? How when you have such a diagnosis do you ask the right questions, let alone ask for a second opinion?

    I also wonder what the official and public response would be if female surgeons mutilated male patients in a similar way?

    Yeah, that was my first thought when I read your original post. Like, what a great, legal excuse to have ready access to women’s bodies! Ughhh

    Absolutely horrifying thought. I have a bad habit of naïvely trusting everything doctors tell me, but it’s statements like this that make me recognize that someday that could bite me in the ass. On the other hand, the ridiculous part is that I might be somewhat safer from that possibility just because I’m male. That’s sick.

    I have no idea. I like to think it would be treated the same, but of course, I’m naïve.

    That reminds me of a news article I just stumbled on yesterday. Apparently in a major Minnesota city there’s a male police chief suing the city’s first female mayor for sexual harassment. Right now it doesn’t sound like most of the claims of harassment has proof, but third party investigators did uncover that she has AT LEAST sent inappropriately sexual memes to male police staff. She has basically just apologized for having a dark sense of humor. I haven’t dug deeply into how people are reacting to that situation, but if we were to, perhaps it could shed some light on a potential answer to your question?
