Rejected medication for ADHD via right to choose (Psychiatry UK). (self harm trigger warning)

I don’t want this post to be long and confusing so sorry if it’s kind of vague.

Today I had an assessment for ADHD via Psychiatry UK on NHS right to choose. I know this sounds hyperbolic but my behaviour and issues have rapidly worsened over the two years to the point I know I need medical intervention to function and even though they didn’t help I have also exhausted every available anti depressant at this point.

My clinician who I have on the NHS after a year or so with an NHS Mental Health Nurse who said she couldn’t do anything for me claims I have ADHD, and I have been diagnosed with it now, but due to the fact I have attempted suicide within a year and I’m on the NHS Community Mental Health team the doctor claimed I cannot get medication.

I feel numb, angry, devastated, and I knew contesting his decision would just make it look worse as I’d look increasingly neurotic. I am seeing my clinician on Tuesday and even that feels several days too late. Has anyone else ever been refused medication for ADHD and eventually obtained it? I know this is an autism forum but I’m auDHD and holding out hope someone else will have been in the same position.

    Sorry about that and you probably feel a bit deflated. However, since you are now officially diagnosed ADHD - you have a decent argument to ask for a second opinion. If overstimulation and distractions are a big issue for you, I would choose a different provider. Many folk have said it is a game changer once medicated.

    The same [Psych’ uk] pathway gave me my ASD diagnosis. The ADHD diagnosis came from ADHD 360 rtc and because of the massive overstimulation issues & distractions. Despite a full disclosure of my erratic past, they deemed it necessary to start medication straight away….and it worked. Elvanse starts at 20mg (low dose) then goes as high as 70mg (higher dose). Ask away if you need anymore info’.
