Wearing sunglasses to avoid socializing

I like to take long walks. I like to try and get 10k steps each day. Walks are one of very few times I get true alone time and time to compartmentalize and just space out. I know it sounds arrogant, but strangers approaching me when I'm walking irritates me to no end. I don't give eye contact, I don't ever really smile but people still talk to me. It's not that I dislike people it's just this hour and a half or so is genuinely the only silence I get in a day sometimes. On walks I don't even wear t-shirts with any interests at this point.

My friend wears sunglasses and says that helps as it gives the indication of been socially unavailable (google also said this). I tried with a cheap pair but hated how they felt on my ears (hate over ear headphones and some hats for the same reason) and I like to have full and clear visibility. Anyone here wear sunglasses to avoid socializing? Does it actually work?

  • Dear DarkElf,

I don't know if this is any help but some people find the sensation of sunglasses more difficult as they simply don't fit. I know from my own experience of poor fitting glasses that it can be helpful to have them fitted to your own head. There are some helpful guides online on how you can try and get them to fit.

I thought I would also recommend taking a look at: Autism and sensory processing

I hope some of the community are able to offer some further advise and their lived experiences.

    Take care,
