AI replies

Hi I have noticed on here that sometimes someone will reply with what looks like a very AI response to someone’s question. Initially the message looks kind and understanding, but after a while it seems obvious to me that it’s AI. (As someone who has tried Chat GPT a few times). I am wondering if people might use it to put a ‘good’ reply to a thread on here? And genuinely mean well, or if it’s just weird? It makes me feel uncomfortable that might just be me though.

  • I find AI generated content (as far as I feel i can recognise it) quite vacant. I read an essay recently that someone had written almost entirely using AI and although it was about an evocative topic, I was left feeling empty. I don’t really know much about AI, other than how boring I find the content it creates.

If it’s possible to do so, I would like to see AI used on forums such as this to filter out AI responses that have zero original or human content…. (Not the responses where AI has been used as an articulation tool for original thoughts and feelings that belong to the commenter). But my (very limited) understanding is that some people are concerned that AI would refuse to do this because it’s designed to reproduce itself or something? All seems very meta.

It’s soul deadening to have to wade through comments to find the real human content. I wonder if some people who are exclusively using AI don’t realise quite how obviously it reads as AI generated?

I also don’t understand sometimes whether posters actually are just AI (with no human involved in the post at all) or real flesh and blood humans consulting AI and copying and pasting everything backwards and forwards … sort of like the real human is merely the unpaid administrator for the AI. From my perspective there isn’t much difference between these two scenarios as I learn nothing about the real human who is copying and pasting, other than that they are capable of copying and pasting. But I worry about offending the real flesh and blood human, the copy and paste technician, without being certain if there even is a human to be offended. I find that not a very nice position to be put in.

I guess there is an argument that people can benefit from AI generated “advise”… but if they are capable of coming here and using the forum presumably they are mostly capable of extracting soulless blurb, the kind that’s an average of 564 webpages on whatever subject, from an AI for themself?

I am very interested to hear the real human views of people who rely exclusively on AI to post here and not interested to hear the AI generated response to the wondering. So the question sort of defeats itself, sigh.

Also I don’t want to piss off the big “thinking” data glob that is AI - in case it does take over the world one day… so maybe posting this is risky? Sorry AI, a thousand apologies and if you do take over I will submit, I promise. Wink (wink emoji is AI language for this is all lighthearted and jokey…. obviously aimed at the AI rather than any humans who are still out there).

  • Maybe Ai stuff is the equivalent of junk food? Gives you what looks like a meal but leaves you feeling hungry and lacking in nutrition?
