This is different from my own distinction and I'm trying to fathom what you say.

How does it fit in to the OP's statement about responses being AI?

Are you ok with AI writing the response ('communication device') but not with the person using it to research ('research tool') the content of the response? (presumably because it could be unreliable etc)?

I definitely don’t want to isolate anyone or make them sad either. We all have enough of that going on.

Thank you for starting this post O and I am reading the replies with interest.

The above is my one big reservation.

In the past there have been 'witchhunts' on this forum to try to spot AI/bots and people have been offended who are not bots or using AI.

Bots are easier to spot because they are probably here to sell a product/service for humans.

AI is a different matter though.

I think it would be sad if members who use AI to help themselves to phrase what they want to say feel alienated.

However, I'm torn about this because I don't like the idea of 'talking' to a machine so perhaps it's being AI -v- using AI?

It's complicated and individual responses will be just that ie individual and will in some cases be relevant to the generation of the forum member.

Okay, but it’s important to point out that AI is improving all the time, and you can still get very sensible responses to issues, although one should always preview what is being generated, of course. So, subject to checks, I don’t really see a problem. AI and human interaction is going to be a big part of the future anyway, so I say bring it on!

Let’s say someone uses AI to share an opinion. If the user reviews it, finds it helpful and reasonable, then what’s the issue? If it’s a solid point of view that sparks discussion, isn’t that a positive thing? Yes I think this could be a good idea. I don’t use AI in here, my replies are exactly what my brain is thinking. I do use AI to have difficult conversations and ask difficult questions, things I couldn’t say to anyone I know in real life. It’s quite useful for that, but it does repeat itself. One time I asked it to design a picture of me in a certain cartoon style and it gave me 3 hands

As a fellow user of AI, I also don't believe you're overthinking it.

I definitely don't think that you're overthinking it. I have recognised the same patterns as you and I am convinced that one particular user, who has been posting quite prolifically recently, is either AI or is heavily using AI to construct their responses.

I don’t think your words come across as AI at all on your posts. I have a very keen eye for detail. I think using AI occasionally and for ideas and to get something clearer than it is in your head is a really useful tool.

Sometimes the way sentences are formed is exactly like AI. I do have conversations with AI that I can’t have in real life so I know how it looks. I’m just wondering if I am over thinking this…. Or is it my pattern recognition shining through? 

I get your point, since it’s possible to verbally ask an AI assistant to express a post that reflects your point of view, saving you from having to type it out. It may still come across as artificial, so it’s not always the case that you’re seeing a purely AI opinion, but rather a human one using AI as a kind of “translator.” So it’s not necessarily as straightforward as people think.

Isn't this a legitimate way of using AI? After all, this new technology is meant to help us as long as it isn't allowed to take over.

I guess using AI is a labour-saving device especially for people who can't type. I know from my own experiences that it can get very frustrating and stressful to type in replies where you want to get your views out but have to keep correcting typos. Not so bad with short replies but if you want to go into depth, it can be very annoying.
