What happens after a diagnosis?

Good evening all, I do hope I have posted this in the correct area, I apologise if I haven't...

My name is Helen and I joined the forum today to get help and advice for myself and my son Ollie.

Ollie is 2 and a half years old and hasn't been formally diagnosed with Autism yet but his doctor says from the list I wrote and gave her of all the things Ollie does that it is highly likely that he is Autistic.

We are currently (still) waiting for the referral to come through.

Ollie has a hearing test next week, NOT looking forward to that! And he starts speech therapy 2 days after his hearing test...

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what happens after a diagnosis is made as this I am at a blank about.. I haven't a clue what will happen next for my boy (or even myself)

Thank you all for listening to me rant on, any advice grately received.

  • Hi,

Unfortunately I don't know where my son will be referred too so I can't ring them up.

  • ah thats shame that she kept it maybey just do another one and keep it forself and if anyone does want a copy of it get them to photocopy it if you know where abouts your being referd too maybey phone them up its just the waiting that is a pain as you jsut want to know then you can move on and put a plan into place on whats best for your son thats what i keep telling myself i totaly understand how frustrating it is and what you said about going out too it can be very hard ive found visual stuff helps with lenny i wa susrposed to make him photo book but decided to do it on my mobile so he understands where we going and who we are going to see i just need one of the dr i can imagin his response thats the one place he does not like and that can be quite eventfull in its self x

  • I asked my doctor the other day when I saw her myself and she said she's done the referral to the paed as she recalls dicating it. She said 5 weeks ago I'd be looking at weeks rather than months but still waiting for at least a letter from them.

I did write a list of all the stuff Ollie does but when I went to see the doctor she kept it...

  • thats good they are coming to you i know lenny hated it but once its done they soon forget about it the waiting part is horrible i see speech therpist back in june she said then it will be about 6 months because of waiting list my gp is not happy as i had not heard anything she wrote them email asking them for us to be seen at first avalible appointmet she has seen how lenny is i understand everychild matters but sometimes you feel like your waiting for a bbus and it never arrives i had a phone call from the assesment people for a chat about lenny feel like im repeating myself all the time he said  6 month wait but im hoping he does not mean 6 months from when he spoke to me as i i had a letter back in june saying he was on there waiting list i ve found it helpfull by keeping a diary of all his behaviour so when they do asses him i can hand them the book i got my partner to get me one as he works in a school i just jotted down everything as it does help when your being asked the same questions over again you can refer back to everything when the speech therpist vists ask them if they have a number you can contact regarding your appointment as you just want to find out how long xx

  • Hi there, thanks for your reply. I know for a fact that they won't get much of a hearing test done on my son as he will NOT want to sit on my knee and he won't leave whatever they put in his ear actually in it!

The speech therapy lady is coming to our house as it was group therapy of about 6 children and Ollie won't like that plus it finishes 15 minutes before I pick my son up from school and as a non driver walking about 3 miles in 15 minutes isn't going to happen!

I'd like the Paed to pull their fingers out and get on with his appointment I haven't heard a thing from them! :-/

  • hi im awating the same too my son is the same age as your son ive more or less posted the same lenny has already had speech test and hearing test the hearing one was a barrale of laughs they got him to sit on my lap whislt someone else  distracts him with toys but they like you too keep quite and they had two tv moniters ither side and they play sounds like bleeping noises to see how good there reaction is after they put like a earphone in childs ear its like the newborn hearing test but unfourtnatley my boy was not having any of it as he has sufferd from so many ear infections in the past that he thinks they are trying to look in his ears which he wont have from anybody i even have trouble cleaning them the speech test is nice and simple they will get toys out and see how your son react and they will ask you how his speech is i am now wating for the diagnosis now and like you not sure what will happen hope this helps all the best x
