aspergers

Hello i would like some advice about aspergers. i am going to see my doctor this week to ask him about it, but before i do i would like to know if you can have aspergers without displaying all of the triad of impairments. i would be very grateful if someone could give me a breakdown of what definately shows signs of aspergers and what doesn't.

Thank you.

  • People with Asperger's have their own individual mix and strength of the traits, they do have requirements that you have to have a certain amount of the traits from each category.  But don't forget that adults learn over the years to hide a lot and they should take this into consideration too.  Also, alexithymia is common on the spectrum so it can be difficult to actually identify your own difficulties.

  • Here are the diagnostic criteria from both the UK's diagnostic manual ICD10 and the American DSM5:

  • Hi paulbranscombe,

The Triad of Impairments is a diagnostic tool and defines things which can be distinguished from other conditions. Consequently there are lots of things it doesn't mention, and some things in the triad cause constant debate, especially on here - do we have no imagination? do we not have empathy? - as particular examples.

Probably best to talk to your doctor about what problems you feel you have, rather than trying to fit yourself in to an aspergers diagnosis. However GPs are a mixed bag when it comes to diagnosis, and may fob you off with other conditions that save them any trouble. You may have to fight for that diagnosis.

You can find the AQ test on line, but it is really a guide. You could also look at Tony Attwood's website (Australian) which is a useful explanation - http://www.tonyattwood.com.au/  No doubt others will offer advice shortly.

    Good luck
