Thank you

I posted a few weeks back under the subject "Diagnosis ....or not". I am 63 and my local GP had been totally dismissive of my request for assessment/diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome.

Thanks to the encouragement and helpful advice of Intenseworld I wrote to my local NHS Authority complaining about the treatment I had received from my GP.  Today I received a letter back confirming an appointment (in 2 weeks time) with a consultant psychiatrist.

I have no expectations - the consultant may conclude that I am too old to be diagnosed.  But I am so relieved to find that I have finally been taken seriously.

Thank you Intenseworld.

  • I know what you mean about verbal self-advocacy.  In that case, prepare a written statement to read out in case they do try the fobbing off approach.  And let them know you have checked up on your rights.  If they say "well not much value at your age" or anything, ask them if they have heard of the "Leading Rewarding and Fulfilling Lives" and tell them you have the same rights as anyone else regardless of age.

You need to get across how it affects you and what benefits you feel a diagnosis would give (if you need help on that score I can post some links which will help you find the right words and give the right perspective).

    Keep us posted!

  • I suspect this is a general psychiatric appointment - the fact that I am being seen so quickly is probably an indication of this.  I will be pleasantly surprised if he doesn't try to fob me off -  I will be no match.  I'm rubbish when it comes to verbal self-advocacy - I can work out exactly what to say after the event ....

Will let you know how I get on.

  • You are so welcome, and I am absolutely delighted you have got this result! Laughing

Well done, for sticking with it.  I am so proud of you.

Is it a general psychiatric appointment or a psychiatrist who can assess for ASC, as it is important that it is and that he is under no illusions as to what he is assessing for?

Wow about how quickly too!  The waiting list is about a year long in my area.

They cannot tell you that you are too old.  If you are autistic, it's lifelong and you are legally entitled to a diagnosis.  Don't let them fob you off.  Chat on the forum here about how to prepare for your appointment if you like.  Good luck.
