Is it autism and how to help?

Hiya everyone I have a little boy who is 4 and had been referred to a speech therapist by pre school teacher but we feel when referred we didn't Know it was autism she said he didn't talk or play with others or take instruction. Like lots of you by the time they usually get an appointent they are different ! my boy plays with others now and is starting to talk. We feel like his is just needing hhelp with his speech and his social communicaton he can understand instruction but if giveN to an unfamiliar adult he appears to go mute he does know what to so but like he gets over whelmed he doesn't have any behavioural problems (she said oh well he is biddable then), routines, obsessions or sensory things. We feel that our therapist is leading for example he was picking a butterfly sticker and she gestured butterfly wings with her hands and he copied and she said oh he's arm flapping does he do that alot and then he skipped to his dad and she said tip toe walking we said no we have never seen him do a up of thoses things?! he copying her gesture.

It it's turning me into crazy person with all this info,  is anyone else's child like this and what hhelp do they actually give it all seems for my boy to be fitting him in to the box.

sorry for going on. Thank you to anyone who replies Smile

  • Hi mummytracy2013,

Welcome to our community. It might be better to start a new thread for your question, and as mentioned it is easier for everyone to read if it's not all in caps.

    Take care,
    Anil

  • Please could you reformat your post to sentence case instead of all block caps as I find it unreadable the way you have posted it.  Once you have done that, I can respond.  I have AS and my eyes are sensitive to text on white, when it's all block caps it's even worse and it stops looking like text it looks like a frantic pattern.  Also, block caps is usually considered shouting in the world of text which isn't good etiquette.  Thanks.

  • HI IM NEW TO THIS SITE MY NAME IS TRACY. MY SON IS 3 IN SEPT AND UP UNTIL HE WAS 14/15 MONTHS HE TALKED HE SAID MUM DAD NAN AND A FEW OTHER BASIC FIRST WORDS BUT THEN HE STOPPED TALKING. HE HAS NOT SPOKE SINCE SO AT HIS 2 AND HALF YEAR CHECK HE WAS REFERRED TO SPEECH. HE ROARS ALOT AND THE OTHER DAY WE MANAGED TO GET HIM TO SAY NO AS HIS BABY SISTER KEPTED TOUCHING HIM OR HIS TOYS AND HE HATED IT SO WE KEPTED GOING OVER THE WORD "NO" SO HE COULD SAY IT TO HER TO GET HER TO STOP, IT TOOK FEW MONTHS BUT HE GOT IT. HE HAS NO OTHER WORDS BUT BABBLES ALOT NOW AND SMILES AND LAUGHS AT ME WHEN I PLAY WITH HIM. HE DOES LINE UP CERTAIN TOYS BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. HE CAN PLAY WITH HIS SIBLINGS BUT OFTEN CHOOSES TO PLAY ALONE. HE CAN PLAY ALL DAY LONG QUITE HAPPY AS LONG AS NO ONE CHANGES WHAT HE IS DOING. HE IS A HAPPY LITTLE BOY BUT OFFEN SEEMS LOSTED IN HIS WORLD. HE HAS NOW STARTED TO POINT FOR WHAT HE WANTS BUT NOT AT THE WORLD AROUND HIM. HE DONT SLEEP AT NIGHT. AT THE SAME TIME HE STOPPED SPEAKING HE ALSO GAVE UP HIS DUMMY HE LOVED HIS DUMMY BUT ONE DAY HE PUT IT IN HIS MOUTH AND NEXT THING I KNEW HE WAS CRYING AND CHUCKING IT AWAY AND WOULD NOT ALLOW IT BACK I CHECKED IT AND THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH DUMMY BUT HE DIDNT LIKE IT IN HIS MOUTH BUT YET HE HAD IT EVERYWHERE  WITH HIM BEFORE THIS AGAIN THIS WAS AROUND 14/ 15 MONTHS. CAN ANYONE RELATE TO ANYTHING LIKE THIS

  • Thank you for commenting yeh I will keep writing it all down its so wide the spectrum for everyone so it's hard like everyone to see where to go to or what help he will get its so long between any speech appointments so kind of over thinking it all in the mean time :0/

  • A speech and language therapist can only give input into the assessment process they can't diagnose and shouldn't really be speculating in that way.  I think you are right to be concerned that she is interpreting wrongly and I would keep notes about it and point out every occasion you believe she has done this, so that you can address this if he does end up being assessed for ASC.  It sounds as if he does need some sort of assessment even if it's not an ASC one.  Do bear in mind that not every autistic child has all the traits.
