Help with cleaning teeth

Hi. My 7 year old son refuses to clean his teeth.  He doesn't like the consistency of toothpaste.  Has anyone got any ideas how I can help him overcome this of any alternatives I can get him to toothpaste

thanks

  • There is a lot of concern using flouride in children with autism because many claim that the fluoride damages the gut lining and can lead to problems, you should google fluoride and autism.

I use Urtekram fennel toothpaste which is suitable for the gluten and dairy free diet and is flouride free.

If you want to clean your childs teeth you need to start again with a soft toothbrush and a tiny bit of toothpaste.  The reason the children dont like it is because it is a sensory issue.  The toothpaste is very dry and many children with autism like water on the toothbrush because it bounces off the teeth when they are being cleaned and many children like to bite down on a wet toothbrush to feel it bounce off the teeth.

You could even start again with just using water to start with, everytime you put the soft toothbrush into your childs mouth dip the brush head into a cup of purified water and clean one area and then dip it back into the water and carry on etc.  Your child will let you clean their teeth if you keep dipping the brush head back into the water.

Once your child has got used to the cleaning move onto using a tiny amount of toothpaste and keep putting the brush head back into water then that way your child will let you clean their teeth.  Also not all bottled water is suitable for children with autism, you need to read what is in the ingredients.
