Help with cleaning teeth

Hi. My 7 year old son refuses to clean his teeth.  He doesn't like the consistency of toothpaste.  Has anyone got any ideas how I can help him overcome this of any alternatives I can get him to toothpaste

thanks

  • There is a lot of concern using flouride in children with autism because many claim that the fluoride damages the gut lining and can lead to problems, you should google fluoride and autism.

I use Urtekram fennel toothpaste which is suitable for the gluten and dairy free diet and is flouride free.

If you want to clean your childs teeth you need to start again with a soft toothbrush and a tiny bit of toothpaste.  The reason the children dont like it is because it is a sensory issue.  The toothpaste is very dry and many children with autism like water on the toothbrush because it bounces off the teeth when they are being cleaned and many children like to bite down on a wet toothbrush to feel it bounce off the teeth.

You could even start again with just using water to start with, everytime you put the soft toothbrush into your childs mouth dip the brush head into a cup of purified water and clean one area and then dip it back into the water and carry on etc.  Your child will let you clean their teeth if you keep dipping the brush head back into the water.

Once your child has got used to the cleaning move onto using a tiny amount of toothpaste and keep putting the brush head back into water then that way your child will let you clean their teeth.  Also not all bottled water is suitable for children with autism, you need to read what is in the ingredients.

  • Hi, colgate do a strawberry flavour and also my son enjoys the bubble gum flavour one too that's a spongbob one i found in the pound shop.

The problem i have is he wants to eat it and climbs up to get it all the time. he doesn't know how to brush he just chews it, but requests the tooth brush too often. I've seen in the service stations a chewing ball they sell with bristles maybe its another option but for small ones its a chocking hazard. Maybe need to ask the dentist for advice.

They have also started painting flouride on the childrens teeth in my area. They say it helps prevent decay but i didn't allow my child to have it done!  People shouldn't consume flouride they say on wiki "to seek medical attention if fouride toothpaste is swallowed": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothpaste. So i should maybe buy a flouride free brand because he wants to swallow it.

So far his teeth look pearly white anyway and no side effects from the little consumption here and there. I found this online i think i'll get it: http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/organic-children-toothpaste.aspx

  • Hi - there's something called Oranurse toothpaste on amazon, but I can't vouch for it in any way

  • Hi

I am looking for a non flavored toothpaste.  Does anyone here have any ideas?

    Thanks

  • Hi - worth searching that internet to see if there are alternatives to toothpaste.  Even if he just uses the tooth brush that will help. Maybe a mouthwash as well?  Also keeping away from foods which cause decay as mentioned by autismtwo.  There is something + I can't remember the name of it, but it's a special chewing gum which has an anti-decay property to it.  I think you have a piece after each meal.  Try doing a search for that.

  • Don't brush this teeth, I don't, never have due to autism,,, but don't drink soda or eat sweets, find sugar to sickening,, I HAVE PERFECT WHITE TEETH,, in fact my primary front teeth did not fall out until I was in my teens,, you see all the brush your teeth crap is a con. But I would also add, I have always had a lot of saliva in my mouth due to stress, so maybe that is my teeth protector,, or I am just genetically lucky ? I wonder how many other people with autism don't brush there teeth and have good teeth ? Laughing
