leaving secondary school

hi! i recently finished secondary school (as in i literally took my last gcse yesterday lol) and now i'm worried on what my next steps are. i wasn't able to be physically in school, i stopped going physically in year 7 and didn't have any sort of education for 3/4 years up until september 2021 where i took an online course to work towards sitting my english language and maths gcses. now once you finish secondary school, you of course have to be in education for another 2 years until you're 18 which is where i'm now stuck. i'd love to be able to go to college like everyone else my age but it was bad enough in a smaller environment, let alone an even bigger one. it also doesn't help that i have no idea what i want to do for a career so i am veryyy lost rn! if anyone has any experience on what they did / are planning to do once they finish(ed) school, it'd be rly helpful! thank u :D

  • I hope you can find something that you really enjoy to do next :) look at your strengths see what you might be able to do. Your good at writing I see, maybe you could do something to do with that?

I hated school. People didn't understand me and chose to make my life hell, teachers included lol.

Thought it would get better for me but being an adult is hard as well. Every day is rough. I wish I could work but every time I try to it's an awful experience.

  • I enjoyed my education. Learning was good most of the time and I did okay with my grades. My troubles with school was that the complex was huge and there was a lot of people and a lot of noise! That was hard and led to a lot of burnout. I was tired all the time and anxiety was giving me a thrashing and a half. I still don't really know how I made it to the end. Safe to say I would never go back. Once was enough.

When I finished I took some time out to relax and think about what I wanted to do. I think that's a good place to start for you. Have a look at what's around and what you may be interested in. It doesn't have to be immediate you can take your time and see what may suit you best whether it's education again or going into a career.

Whatever you choose I wish you the best of luck ahead.

  • that's true ): i was very lucky to be able to have friends but i think that's probably because i was masking literally 24/7 and whenever i slipped i think i definitely got made fun of haha but hopefully people are nicer and more understanding in more mature settings!

  • I didn't mind school, to be honest, but I was exploited by my classmates; then taken advantage of.

On reflection; I can see why school causes resentment. Being in a Secondary Modern created an entire 'Us and Them' scenario.

I always feel that those who make no effort are rewarded in our society.

  • thank you so much for the suggestion! i'll look into it :)

  • thank you so much! i hated school too lol, i'll definitely think about things that i enjoy and hopefully find a course that fits! ^_^

  • I went to an adult college to do my a levels. You can once you are 16. It was very relaxed. You have a lot more independence and control over how you learn. It’s a bit more like uni. Classes are more like lectures and a lot of the work you do in a workshop or library if you prefer.

it is less social than a 6th form I imagine, you’ll be with a range of ages from 16 to 60 although it’s mostly <25y/os , it’s also less stressful and more flexible. And it’s more social and more engaging than learning online. So if you’re looking for something half way it may suit you better.

  • Hi,

Congratulations on making it through secondary school! Lol I hated school, absolute nightmare from start to finish for me.

Now you've finished this gives you a lot of time to chill and relax. There's no rush. Just take your time and think about what you may want to do. What do you enjoy? You could use things you enjoy and like and then use them to go into something amazing. I love tennis and knew when I was still at school I'd do this if I could. And I did. I'm not a worldwide famous player but I do this now and I love it Slight smile

There are so many things you can do. And there is still lots of time so don't overthink and worry about it all at once.
