neighbour with asperger's syndrome

Dear Who ever can help,

We have been living in a maisonette for 7 years in Edgware HA8 and have endured continuous issues of undue noise, disturbance and harassment (even the fact of swearing at my wife and daughter) from the tenant above who has Asperger's. It has been causing a lot of issues for my family and we have spoken to the police and local council, the tenant is in his 50s and has been there for along time, we own the property and are not going to sell due to his behaviour, Yes I have read up about the Syndrome and understand, but what i don't understand is if he doesn't like noise why is he living on a busy road and above people.

any advice would be greatly received, maybe you have gone through the same scenario or you can just give advice.

thank you in advance,

Jonny

  • Bare with me, but you could (for the purpose of clearer understanding - it may help but not equate to change and stating this is important) ask him to create a breakdown on the expectations and responsibilities according his understanding of the ethics, codes and legalities of 1. renting, 2. renting a property near a busy road on top of neighbours. This may seem a bit dramatic, but he may actually really enjoy writing all this down and doing the research. Also, maybe make sure he's not subjected to LEDs in his flat. Some owners will take out transformers and only have LEDs. It's worth it for everyone to make sure he's still using incandescent and halogen (I can't stress this enough). The most important part here is that he consider ethics/aesthetics. Sometimes it's a missing element that would bring everyone a great deal less stress. Many people with ASD have not been afforded or taught proper boundaries and do not know when they're being crossed, therefore do not know when they're crossing them. Just a thought!!
