Adult chronic bowel issues from withholding stool as a child

Hi guys, I just wanted to post about this because it's something I feel very isolated about due to a lack of support groups on fb or elsewhere dealing with such issues. I also wanted to know if anyone else deals with them, as I know I'm not the only one even if it bl**dy feels that way sometimes lol

So did anyone else withhold their stools as a child, due to being afraid of pooping? I suddenly stopped being afraid at around age 8 and my withholding ended then, but the years of stool holding have left me with chronic bowel issues. These issues are mainly chronic constipation and 'slowness', for which I have to take laxatives for (x2 Movicol every 2 weeks or so) and have done for years now. I have tried eating prunes and smoothies, which worked for a while but then stopped and I had to go back on the Movicol. I am also hoping to get to a dr at some point, to have an x ray done in order to see if I have a redundant colon or megacolon which is causing the slowness etc (which can be common with my history).

Can anyone else relate to my story?

  • My thing isn't  exactly the same but my brother i know for sure had this and one day it all just went? he can do everything as normal even though I'm sure he withheld. I've always felt limited when looking for advice but i knew it was common to have bowel issues especially if you're autistic. I withhold because of the big huge build up, but I'm unsure on what the real underlying issue is because my mum said i really suffered when trying to pass things when i was a little baby? so there was something before I got old enough to withhold. I would constantly leak due to overflow I had spent a very long time in hospital taking movicol and pica lax i think I've got slowness I've recently had to get that checked out as I'm opting into a stoma bag, I don't see any way forward other than this. My doctor thinks it could be hurspungs disease, however I think it could be a complicated task as i have a very complicated mind. Don't ever feel out of place or alone, I've been looking since forever for someone to understand a little bit of my story to. I think its very common for autistic people to have bowel issues, like I said previously my brother had this I know for a fact but he doesn't disclose it with anyone I feel like I could have many answers for you and my self kind of if he ever spoke about it. Our stories aren't identical but very similar. But your story and my brothers seem very close, my mum used to be worried about pooping when she was younger to so it runs in my family. I  think this is a very good place to find what you are looking for, if you ever want to talk feel free to message me or just reply to this! i wish you all the best Slight smile
