Adult chronic bowel issues from withholding stool as a child

Hi guys, I just wanted to post about this because it's something I feel very isolated about due to a lack of support groups on fb or elsewhere dealing with such issues. I also wanted to know if anyone else deals with them, as I know I'm not the only one even if it bl**dy feels that way sometimes lol

So did anyone else withhold their stools as a child, due to being afraid of pooping? I suddenly stopped being afraid at around age 8 and my withholding ended then, but the years of stool holding have left me with chronic bowel issues. These issues are mainly chronic constipation and 'slowness', for which I have to take laxatives for (x2 Movicol every 2 weeks or so) and have done for years now. I have tried eating prunes and smoothies, which worked for a while but then stopped and I had to go back on the Movicol. I am also hoping to get to a dr at some point, to have an x ray done in order to see if I have a redundant colon or megacolon which is causing the slowness etc (which can be common with my history).

Can anyone else relate to my story?

  • Yoga might help, lots of postures are intended to massage internal organs  and move digestion along.

  • My thing isn't  exactly the same but my brother i know for sure had this and one day it all just went? he can do everything as normal even though I'm sure he withheld. I've always felt limited when looking for advice but i knew it was common to have bowel issues especially if you're autistic. I withhold because of the big huge build up, but I'm unsure on what the real underlying issue is because my mum said i really suffered when trying to pass things when i was a little baby? so there was something before I got old enough to withhold. I would constantly leak due to overflow I had spent a very long time in hospital taking movicol and pica lax i think I've got slowness I've recently had to get that checked out as I'm opting into a stoma bag, I don't see any way forward other than this. My doctor thinks it could be hurspungs disease, however I think it could be a complicated task as i have a very complicated mind. Don't ever feel out of place or alone, I've been looking since forever for someone to understand a little bit of my story to. I think its very common for autistic people to have bowel issues, like I said previously my brother had this I know for a fact but he doesn't disclose it with anyone I feel like I could have many answers for you and my self kind of if he ever spoke about it. Our stories aren't identical but very similar. But your story and my brothers seem very close, my mum used to be worried about pooping when she was younger to so it runs in my family. I  think this is a very good place to find what you are looking for, if you ever want to talk feel free to message me or just reply to this! i wish you all the best Slight smile

  • didn't mean to imply you were taking anything daily ---- altho i read your post a few times, i only retain so much.

so, in answer to your post - i feel i totally relate to your problem. i assume others would also.. actually, on the right side of this, where they post related (thoroughly oudated) posts, i see all these "bowel movements" etc....

  • My bad, the post just said x2 Movicol every 2 weeks. By that I meant I take 2 sachets *once* and those 2 keep me going for up to 2 weeks, by which things then start to slow down again. I don't take it daily.

  • Nope it's definitely not stress related, my colon just works at a slower pace. I don't take laxatives daily, my post clearly stated that and osmotic laxatives are far safer than stimulants (bulk forming ones are also safe) anyway. And I've seen doctors, but they just don't take me seriously despite having a full history of my issues. Anyway, I'll consider the psyllium as mentioned. Obviously I am trying to get things sorted once the lockdown eases, but it won't be simple and this post was just about seeing if anyone else could relate.

  • you'll have to deal with any medical professionals on your own, since idk anything about you and your actual issues - and i'm not a doctor, lol. i take 1 tablespoon of psyllium every day. i view it as perfectly natural. i never take laxatives - i doubt one would take laxatives every day. that can't be healthy.

what's helped me is a good diet, that is, reasonably good... i don't like veggies, as i tell people, but i force them down. there are only certain ones that i like to prepare and eat. that's my aspergers, i suppose. i live in california. lots of vegans, lots of sustainable food, sustainable butchers.. the whole lot.  every other person is vegan - kind of kidding.

i think you should try to get off laxatives and get on a good diet. if i eat sugar and refined carbs too much, my bowels get plugged up too. probably most peoples' would, actually. altho, for all i no, your diet might be superlative.

to me, if prunes work for awhile, and stop, you need to reevaluate what changed, how your diet is, etc - i don't think there is any huge mystery here. when i was your age, i assume you're a young adult, i was just as i guess confused about this stuff...

i guess it may even be stress related.

  • Basically... I'll look into the psyllium, as although it seems to be only Movicol that works for me prunes and smoothies did work for a while

  • not familiar with fodmap.  i used to think i was lactose intolerant. i have a variety of chronic pain issues. at this point, i simply try to eat a healthy diet, i limit my sugars, etc, as much as i can... i'm an adherent of the gut bacteria stuff -- which is, i guess in my simplistic terms, if you eat tons of refined carbs, it is reflected in your gut bacteria. you'll be fostering gut bacteria that like what comes from a diet of mainy refined carbs. if you eat a good diet, you'll be fostering gut bacteria that come from that diet, and hopefully that will mitigate food cravings and intolerances.

that's worked for me, actually. pretty basic stuff. probiotics, prebiotics (psyllium is one). healthy gut bacteria. and various doctor work ups - rheumatology, etc. i don'[t consult dieticians. my friend's father's wife was a dietician. she fed him big macs. that's enough dietician for me.

  • i guess psyllium can block you up. too much of anything can be negative. like, you can drown in too much water. there is a world of difference between a stimulant laxative and psyllium. psyllium is basically indigestible fiber, which is what you should be eating every single day for proper health. a stimulant laxative - i guess some folk accomplish that by downing a gallon of espresso. just not good 4 you.

yes, i had a poo phobia... i guess. it's about sensitivities, which include sensitivities about what is going on inside you.

  • Yeah, I am gluten and wheat free and try to avoid dairy as well. I never drink fruit juice, just plain H2O and I am also familiar with common food triggers including FODMAP (heard of it?).

As mentioned in my post, I have tried natural things but they tend to stop working after a while. I've not tried psyllium husk but I read it can block you up, so I've given it a wide berth like I have stimulant laxatives; which can pack up your bowel with chronic usage.

So are you saying you also had a poo phobia?

  • i can, absolutely.

it's been a lifelong issue, and was a huge problem growing up. now i always do my best to watch my diet, i take psyllium daily (1 tablespoon), i force myself to eat my veggies (i don't eat enough probably). if i'm at someone's house, i can't just go... it's like everything inside just gets stoppered up. once i get home, i can. it's a problem.

i believe it's tied to my food preferences (i mitigate that by keeping tabs of what i eat, so i eat a sort of balanced diet), sensitivities (negative to bathrooms, smells, etc), and body sensitivities. these are senses of what's going on inside you. i think i have every sensitivity in the book, some hypo, but most hyper.

i would suggest you carefully look at your diet, reduce or eliminate refined carbs and sugar (of course), eat fiber... drink water...i never drink fruit juice (colored sugar water, literally)  i don't think doctors should be relied on. i do whatever i can to try to have a reasonable diet. that's how i handle it, mainly.

i also intermittent fast, and eat fermented food. you want a healthy biome in your gut. that means you should consume non-digestible fiber daily. such as psyllium, among other things.
