What to expect?

Hello all

My little boy has been referred to a community paediatrician, as his 2 half year development check flagged up some concerns along with some concerns we have also.

I have been through a lengthy diagnostic process with my 10 year old but given the age difference I'm not sure what to expect this time around. Can anybody whose had a younger child diagnosed tell me about the whole experience and what to expect please?

Thank you

  • Thanks very much for your reply. Our almost 10 year old has only recently been diagnosed, after a 3 year battle, and already we have seen such a difference in the way he has been treated at school.

Although I obviously don't want to label our 2 half year old unnecessarily I am so aware of the difficulties he may face without it, and would like to get all the support systems in place for him  should he need them.

    Thanks again.

  • I think what happens next depends where you live.  We live in the West Midlands and when we started to have concerns about our younger son we were referred to our local paediatrican by our health visitor.  She was of the opinion that our younger son didn't need a diagnosis because we were coping.  I didn't think we were coping and knew from our experiences with our eldest that a diagnosis is necessary to provide other services, education etc., so I went back and insisted that he be diagnosed.

After being on the waiting list for a few months we went to the Child Development Centre five mornings a week for two weeks.  It was set up like toddler group with some activities for the children as a group and other times when they could play with whatever they wanted. He was seen by Speech and Language, Psychology, physios, OT, Optician during that time and his interactions with the other children and other adults were assessed.  We then had to wait a couple of months and then went to a meeting where we were given the formal diagnosis of AS.

This happened to us four years ago but friends with younger children say the system hasn't changed.

    Hope this helps.  Good luck
