What is your opinion on this?

My son is 3 and is currently seeing a paeditrician and he impressed to her as Aspergers.

Since reading up more on ASD, I am pretty sure I am and also my father (who is a textbook ADHD.)

I spoke to my GP and asked to be referred somewhere for diagnosis, I was asked what traits I have etc. He then agreed to send me somewhere local.. I have heard people don't get taken too seriously if they are not sent to a proper place. I did suggest a referral to Cambridge (which is only 20 miles from me) however he said "no, let's try this place that I suggested"  It's been about 3 months and I have still had no appointment through or any contact..

I'm a bit unsure and skeptical as to why he wouldn't want to send me to Cambridge and would rather go to this local place that as far as I am aware does not diagnose people for ASD or if he is planning on referring me to anywhere at all..

Any help / opinions would be appreciated!

  • What your GPs thinking might be, Setco, is to have you screened for other conditions first.

Numerous mental health conditions can produce symptoms that are very similar to Asperger's, so it's not entirely unreasonable to screen you for those first.

However, there is a major risk here, because if the person screening you is not aware of Asperger's and the subtle differences between that and any possible mental health conditions, then they may misdiagnose you.

Whereas, someone trained in the diagnosis of Asperger's can rule those conditions out by looking for the things that indicate Asperger's instead.

If I were you I'd find out everything you can about the place you're being refered to, and insist on seeing someone trained in the diagnosis of Asperger's - this is your right, and questions of cost should not come in to getting you the right diagnosis.
