Raynaud's phenomenon

I have recently been diagnosed with primary Raynaud's by the GP, the same condition that runs on the female line of my family on my Mum's side. Primary Raynauds is a benign condition caused by an over active sympathetic nervous system that causes the arteries that feed the hands and feet to over contract, starving the extremities of blood. The fingers, in my case, first go white, then purple, then red as the blood returns. Cold temperatures and/or temperature fluctuations trigger Raynauds, and the extremities turn very cold. Thankfully mine is very mild - my Mum's is more severe-and I do not experience any pain. Does anyone else have this?

  • I have it too as do my cousins on my mother's side. I might try that recipe Jon. I wear long thermals all winter and very think over socks, and frequent hot drinks. Fortunately I don't have to go outside much.

  • For the last few years I've had on/off swollen fingers or lumps on the skin of my fingers. My GP didn't have a clue what it was so I've been referred to the rheumatology dept. at a hospital, I'm starting to wonder if its connected to the Raynaud’s and my poor circulation. Every test I've had so far has come back normal though. Undecided  If I remember I'll come back here in a few months after my appointment and let you know.

  • This happens to me, too. Maybe my anxiety makes it worse? You just have to remember that it is a benign condition, nothing serious. My mum has it, too, as did her mum.

  • I've got it and its a killer. Yell  Haven't been able to find a pair of gloves that help me in winter, my fingers hurt like hell for the first 30 minutes of being outside 'til my blood is pumping from walking about.  & I have a tendency to turn purple indoors sometimes if its quite cold.  My hands go purple and then my face and lips, I look like a corpse. Laughing

  • Hi Tree,

have you tried fingerless gloves for using keyboard?

  • I was told I have Raynaud's about a year ago.  I wasn't given any advice on what to do, but I did look it up on the 'net.  Mine isn't too severe.  I do have to wear thick socks and gloves. typing on the keyboard also makes my hands go cold. I know of one other mother of an ASD child who has it. Otherwise, never heard of it!

  • Hey Hope,

I went to the doctors a few years ago and got diagnosed with Raynaud's....not sure if it was primary...I am never quite sure what the doctor is telling me.It comes on in the cold half of the year mostly. The joints on my fingers swell and feel bruised. My hands and feet get cold very easily. I work outside in all weather and this doesn't help. Gloves and thick socks help but sometimes they just seem to keep my extremities cold. . I even wear fingerless gloves inside the house. Physical activity and a warm core is good too. Cayene pepper in tea. I make a beeswax and oil salve with ginger, cayene and rosemary oil (and some other essential oils). rubbing it in warms the hands and gets the circulation going and it helps keep theelements off my hands when I can't wear gloves.

  • Nope Hope - that's a new one on me. :)
