Dont know what to do

Hi,my son is 3 1/2 and has signs of autism he has poor eye contact delayed speech headbanged all the time from age 1 ,ignores pain, has difficulty expressing his needs seems sensitive to noise and touch, always lining things up perfectly does not play with toys prefers to throw them till they break does not do imaginary play hates crowds we have to rely on buses hes ok with this as long as he can sit in his favourite seat right at the back away from everyone if this seat is not free then he plays up all the way home ,he has no sense of danger cant explain things to him ,always putting inedible things in his mouth is very resistent to change and stubborn with routines, and is very repetetive and obsessed with things, gets upset over silly things , has never waved bye at the same time he is really clever for his age knows all the letters of the alphabet can count to twenty recognises his name can write his name ,anyway when i mentioned all this to my health visitor at 3yr check she reffered him for speech therapy and we also got referred to a multi agency team and they wont refer him for autism check as they think he behaves the way he does because he is frustrated because of his speech which is improving all the time yet the behaviours are not and they also think he is not learning properly in pre school  and i was  told that if they did refer him for autism assessment he would not be assessed before he has had an educational psycologists report (he is being reffered for this)  is this true was also told its a 1yr wait for autism assessment

  • Hi

My son is also 3.5 years old and we had a simlar situation, although I took the matter into my own hands paid the money to have him assessed privately by a community paediatrician, slt and ot.  We have always said this is the best money we have ever invested.   He is statemented with fantastic provision as I fought hard with the LA and we won our DLA appeal to say he has higher rate in both components and this extra money funds more private therapy.   My advice to you is don't wait push for your appointments of self fund if that is a possibility.  It is sad that LA's will not diagnose in our area until 9 that is a long way off and far too late in my opinion.  You are probably at the start of a very tiresome journey.  Write everything about your son in a journal (daily if possible) as this will help you when it comes to assessments, DLA and other areas.  Best of luck I sincerely hope it works out.
