I'm feeling scared - most likely formal diagnosis this week

Hi all. My girl has appointment wednesday with her Dr. Her Speech Therapist came to her additional needs play group last week, and for the first time all week, Daisy had an hour long melt down because she was not aloud outside to play until later. She said she is going to email the Dr quickly before Wednesday and recommend she be diagnosed already with ASD and to be reviewed in a year. She said it will help as I will get so much support. What kind? Social Workers etc?

The actual label for her is so scary. I know that it changes nothing it's all the same after but its confusing how I feel.

I'm feeling so scared, I was really upset in March when the Dr said yes, she does have problems. It was hard hearing someone else say it?

The Doctor has only met her once and Speech therapist twice. Is it usual for it to be so quick? she is 3 next month.

I'm sorry to bug you all with this I just don't know who to talk to xx

  • Thank you everyone for your replies. I meant pediatrician but I have trouble spelling it so I called him Dr Embarassed

She was first seen by a speech therapist a year ago and thats when it was detected she was very behind with her speech and this opened up a whole can of worms and they noticed she would not make eye contact or play with toys or interact with others. Our health visitor did 2 year old test with the dollie's, building blocks etc & she was coming up as being about 15 months behind her age.

It's only since March (we got lost in the system for almost a year!) that we have met her pediatrician and a new speech therapist and been taking her to additional needs stay and play and now the play group there x

  • We had quite a quick diagnosis when my son was 8 but he already had a statement and DLA etc. so I suppose a lot of ground work had been done.  It was really the school, paedatrician, SLT for Social Communication and ourselves that contributed to the assessments along with my son of course.

I am guessing the specialists involved in your case have been in their role for sometime and will be thorough.  Ask them for some information on how they go about the diagnosis.

As others have said, it is hard and takes time to accept if she is diagnosed but it will benefit her with getting the right support to help her achieve her full potential and early intervention does make a massive, positive difference.  Have you seen the short story "Welcome to Holland".  Google it.

It will all be ok whatever the result.

    Best wishes
  • Hi Ive just replied to the post you left me then I saw this. Im not sure you can get a diagnosis that fast. (although I could be wrong) When you say doctor do you mean gp or someone at CAHMS My ds was refered to CAHMS by my gp and we then had 2 and a half years of tests and assesments. Your dd will have to meet certain criteria to be diagnosed.  There are different assessments depending how old your child is, we had an ADOS and a ADI amongst other things. If you google assessments for autism in children there is lots of info out there. Sorry I cant be of more help and you are not bugging anyone. I understand how scared and confused you are because I feel the same. Hugs x

  • Don't worry, it's normal to feel scared, confused, upset and a whole host of other things, so don't beat yourself up for feeling how you feel.

Accept the diagnosis, and try not to see it as a negative (in many ways it's not).
