Support for adults

Looking for some advice - does anyone know how to apply for Adult Autism support from a local authority (UK) and what sort of support can a local authority provide?

Also, has anyone who's asked for and received support from a local authority found it helpful?

My local authority - Powys - unfortunately does not currently provide any adult specific autism support.

  • Hi Susie 163, I'm wondering what sort of support you feel you need?

I've found my best support here amongst our own kind - you might be surprised at the breadth of knowledge that people have, sometimes. We often moan about how sparse and sporadic services are for adults. Children (and their poor parents) often seem to be relatively unsupported too.

Powys is a big county with low poulation, so I'd expect specific services for AS people to be, at best, patchy, even if they exist at all. This is a good question to ask, though, because it isn't easy to find people who even begin to understand the spectrum, let alone know what to do about it. I think that we all know this one, so as I say, being on here is perhaps, at least currently, your best option, and at least you know you're amongst friends!

If you have something particular that you need help with, Adult Social Services should do that anyway, whether or not they 'get' the condition. I'm pretty sure that my local SS are helping me. You might even find that as you ask for help, you're also teaching them something about AS people. We live in (often unrequited) hope!

You can't give any location details on here that might identify you unfortunately, but I wonder if you've looked at this?

There might be someone there who has better local knowledge - just a thought.
