Support for adults

Looking for some advice - does anyone know how to apply for Adult Autism support from a local authority (UK) and what sort of support can a local authority provide?

Also, has anyone who's asked for and received support from a local authority found it helpful?

My local authority - Powys - unfortunately does not currently provide any adult specific autism support.

  • Hi - it's very unfortunate that your LA doesn't have any autism service providers on their approved list.  As you know it is important that whoever supports your son/daughter should be well trained in autism by a reputable provider.  You could contact your Chair of Adult social care (or similar title).  This person will be a councillor.  Check out your council's web page.  It sounds like you'll have a battle on your hands as money is being cut every year from council budgets.  Some provision can be joint between health + social care, depending upon the person's health needs.  All that would have to be assessed by social care + health.  Have you a social worker?  You could contact your MP.  There may be further info via the home pg.  You could try the nas helpline?
