Housing urgent!!

Hi I'm L and I'm really struggling with life at home, I really need to leave because it is becoMing way too much for me too handle. I am having breakdowns every time someone annoys me and it's getting too frequent. I'm scared I might hurt myself. I want to phone housing companies but I cant talk on the phone and I have no money, I just need to have a little place of my own ASAP !

  • Hi Longman

I reported it when it appeared yesterday, so do Electra. It was dealt with today, according to a message elsewhere.

  • So its OK to slip it in inother people's threads......... that really shows no comprehension of the needs and interests of people on the spectrum....eugh....

  • thankyou soooo much for your help, I'll get right on it.

  • Sorry, should have made it clear that they should also publish e-contact details too, see your Local Authority website for details.

  • Lucky for you, I am an AS person and a registered Housing professional. Lucky for me, you've asked about my favourite subject! I'll try to help, so here goes...

In all cases, you are entitled to advice from your local authority, so they must be your first stop. Call them, and ask to speak with Housing Advice, they'll tell you what to do next but it should be an appointment with them to discuss your needs with you. They might also send you a form to fill out before you go. You can take anyone with you for support. If you can show need, they may agree to come to see you at your present home. Talk to them, they're usually very helpful and they will know what local options they have available for housing you.

Firstly, are you old enough to hold a legal tenancy? You must be 18 or over, otherwise it's a different scenario.

Over 18. If you have a formal diagnosis, you are a Vulnerable Person and are entitled to primary consideration. Most Councils (I don't know where you live) operate as single point of access and can nominate you to any Housing provider on their list. Could be Council, could be Housing Association. You are also entitled to claim Housing Benefit towards your rent and Council Tax. So, first stop, your local Council.

If you are undiagnosed, you can still apply but they will not accept you as a priority, although they should enquire as to your full circumstances before making any decision, and there is an appeal process if you think they've made the wrong one.

Under 18. You cannot legaly hold a tenancy until you're a legal 'adult'. However, there is a system for housing younger people, in 'foyer' or 'gateway' projects mostly, but there are sometimes 'special' local schemes too. These are unlikely to be suitable for you as they are specifically for young people, and they tend to be 'livelier' places unsuitable for your needs.

It is possible for Social Services to support you for a Tenancy, methods vary but they do exist, although, sadly, not everywhere. Do not rely on this, consider yourself extremely lucky if they do - it's rare that they do it. Housing Advice at the Council will know, and may even get them involved for you if they think it is appropriate.

I won't carry on, I've told you plenty to be going on with, it looks simpler than it is, but if you need any more guidance, help or advice, I'm always on here at some point during the week.
